Pentathlon 2020 Challenge

Hi all

It's time again to join in with another Pentathlon, as organised by SETI.Germany.

The start date is 5th May 2020 and the Challenge will take place over 2 weeks, with 5 different projects selected by the Challenge organisers, which will represent specific "events", such as a Marathon, (that takes 2 weeks) and other events taking place over a day or more.

UBT is already enrolled so all one has to do, to take part, is to crunch on specific projects on specific days.

See here for more details:

https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/start.php

PS: This is despite me saying last year:
Unless circumstances change, I won't be registering UBT for next years Pentathlon as there seems to be little point
...as I suspect that some members might feel it is worth a shot at this year...we shall see.

(Edit) Events and dates for Pentathlon - times tweaked so as not to cause confusion about when 00:00 occurs on a certain day:

Marathon: Rosetta - 14 days
Start: 05 May 2020 00:01 UTC
End: 18 May 2020 23:59 UTC

City Run: Universe@home - 5 days

End: 11 May 2020 23:59 UTC

Cross Country: Amicable Numbers - 5 days

End: 16 May 2020 23:59 UTC

Sprint: Ibercivis - 3 days
Start: 16 May 2020 00:01 UTC
End: 18 May 2020 23:59 UTC

Javelin Throw: NumberFields - 5x 1 day events
#1 Start: 05 May 2020 00:01 UTC
End: 05 May 2020 23:59 UTC

#2 Start: 10 May 2020 00:01 UTC

Hi Tim,

I'll be sticking with Folding for now, all CPUs and GPUs are engaged. Where there's any slack time I do a bit of Primegrid; otherwise I get withdrawal symptoms :-D

The Pentathalon format looks really interesting. Much more strategy involved with the overlaid events, so it would benefit from a proper evaluation of our resources to hand and optimal allocation thereof. You'd want to take a few days in advance to get the team prepped, ideally.

That being said, I don't think that we can realisticaly compete in it and also the FB sprints unless they magically align somehow. One or the other needs to be prioritised and I have to guess the winner will be FB. I guess we'll see what others think?? I can always choose these pentathalon projects when they don't conflict with FB, but I am supposing that won't end with us with us on the podium.

Hi Damien

The Pentathlon is a well thought out Challenge and it does engage teams to get involved.

Sadly, UBT has never done that well (in overall terms) over the years - and it really needs a high number of active members to support it, in order for the Team to achieve a good result.

And it needs members to switch between projects on different days, in order to compete on each of the 5 "events". That only works well, if you have enough members actually getting involved.

So, not withstanding the forthcoming Sprint, I'll probably keep an eye on which projects are chosen for each "event" and if I have some resources available then I'll do my bit.

But I very much doubt we can get a Top 3 placing.

regards
Tim

Hi all

The Pentathlon is now in it's last few days and I've been updating the first post in this thread with the dates and times when specific projects are/were being featured. There is now just one left which is the soon-to-be announced Day 5 of the Javelin event.

Thus far, UBT is in equal 26th place (out of 30) and I doubt that we'll do much better than that by the end.

regards
Tim
