Primegrid 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing Challenge

This section is where you can post topics related to Challenges from other websites, such as Formula-BOINC, SETI-Germany and BOINCstats, as well as project challenges such as from WCG, PrimeGrid et al.

As a Team, we really want to engage as many team members with these challenges, as this gives us a great way of attracting more members to our Team...plus we get to show our strengths as a Team by (hopefully) doing well in each one.

PS: I have moved lots of topics into this section where they are relevant...as you can see, we've always been happy to take part in Challenges...and long may that continue ;-)

Primegrid 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing Challenge

Post by UBT - Mikee »

Hi

Started last night but runs for 5 days. Only tasks downloaded and completed during the race count. CPU only.

http://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=8635
To participate in the Challenge, please select only the Proth Prime Search LLR (PPS) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section. The challenge will begin 15th July 2019 20:17 UTC and end at 20th July 2019 20:17 UTC. Note that PPSE, PPS Mega and PPS-Sieve do not count towards this challenge.
I downloaded a couple before the start to see what they were like. On this Ryzen system they take about 20 hours and get around 5000 credits each. They use all cores available. So if you have 4 cores/threads each WU will use 4 cores, though I'm running at 75% at the moment so have three tasks running. I assume that if you have a 2 core system then it will use them but will probably take twice as long.

Currently we're running 54th out of 102 teams.

Participants are...

256 Sean
270 Paul Griffin
297 Stephen Brown
310 Meddy2065
317 LupusUK
352 Gordon Lack
362 Rimmer161

I won't appear 'til tomorrow sometime as I'm not running 24/7 at the mo.

Anyone else want to join?

Hi Mike

Good call....I was wondering what to do with my CPUs until the next Sprint...and sadly, I've already filled my cache with some WCG and SETI CPU tasks, as well as a few left-over MilkyWay tasks.

But once they are done with, I'll let PrimeGrid grab some PPS LLR tasks.

Also please note:
Application builds are available for Linux 32 and 64 bit, Windows 32 and 64 bit and MacIntel. Intel CPUs with FMA3 capabilities (Haswell, Broadwell, Skylake, Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake) will have a very large advantage, and Intel CPUs with AVX-512 (certain recent Intel Skylake-X and Xeon CPUs) will be the fastest.

ATTENTION: The primality program LLR is CPU intensive; so, it is vital to have a stable system with good cooling. It does not tolerate "even the slightest of errors."
Credits seem to be fixed at 167.xx per validated task.

Here's a link to the user stats on this Challenge:

http://www.primegrid.com/challenge/2019 ... users.html

...and the Team stats are here:

Hi

What a bungle! For some weird reason I was doing "The Riesel Problem LLR (TRP)" I'm sure I selected "Proth Prime Search LLR (PPS)" and I probably did but forgot to save! So forgot anything I said about 4 CPU and stuff!

Hi All,

Not taking part in this as I'm busy doing other stuff but for those that are, from past experience PPS runs best when all the table can fit in the cache which is with two threads per task for most modern CPUs. Older Xeons with bigger caches are better with one thread per task but it's fairly close either way.

Code: Select all

<app_config>
  <app_version>
       <app_name>llrPPS</app_name>
       <cmdline>-t 2</cmdline>
       <avg_ncpus>2</avg_ncpus>
   </app_version>
</app_config>
Almost as good (97%) is one CORE per task (turn hyperthreading off)

Code: Select all

<app_config>
  <app_version>
       <app_name>llrPPS</app_name>
       <cmdline>-t 1</cmdline>
       <avg_ncpus>1</avg_ncpus>
   </app_version>
</app_config>
On my i7 previously:
8 threads per task: 167 tasks per day - 27,884 cr/d
4 threads per task: 2*97 tasks per day - 32,409 cr/d
2 threads per task: 4*50 tasks per day - 33,996 cr/d
1 core per task (hyperthreading off): 4*49 tasks per day; 32,992 cr/d

And don't forget to also add in:

Code: Select all

<app>
<app_name>llrPPS</app_name>
<max_concurrent>x</max_concurrent>
</app>
where x is the number of tasks you want to run - the default is "1" if this tag isn't used....so, on my 16-core Xeon, only 1 task using 4 cores was in use. :-(

Adding the above and making x=4, allows me to have 4 tasks running at the same time with each task using 4 cores.

Hi

Now I'm shifting!

Team up to 40th and I've got some credits up. Turned off the AMD version of hyper-threading to see if it makes much difference, so now running 7 cores instead of 13 threads - odd numbers but that's the way it is!

15 members now crunching and UBT now up to 33rd place (out of 165 teams).

My contribution has been hampered by the fact that one of my PCs stopped downloading new PG tasks...it ran dry sometime on Thursday night :-( It's back crunching again now though !!

PS: Anyone else notice that the fixed credits awarded per task are slowly increasing - they started at around 167.xx and my latest tasks are earning 169.50 credit per validated task ;-) Still not enough to be significant...but interesting that it is increasing.

ChrisC now leads our merry bunch of 15 members and we're now in the Top 30 teams.

Just 9 hours left of this Challenge which ends tonight at 20:17 UTC - 50 years to the minute after Apollo 11 lands on the Moon.

We're up to 29th now and chasing Denmark hard. The gap then gets very big so I think 28th will be our limit if we get that.

Hi Chris

We've passed Denmark now - and closing on Noobs

Code: Select all

Posn	Team			Credits

So, unless there's some minor miracle, with 130,000 credits coming our way in the next 3 hours, then 28th is where we'll stay ;-)

And big thanks to those who knowingly joined in and helped us to do well in this Challenge.

Yeah it was a good challenge, the threadrippers really hold their own.

Well done to everyone.. 600K / 3600 WUs is an excellent result for a few days team crunching.
