WCG Challenge of Nations 2018

This section is where you can post topics related to Challenges from other websites, such as Formula-BOINC, SETI-Germany and BOINCstats, as well as project challenges such as from WCG, PrimeGrid et al.

As a Team, we really want to engage as many team members with these challenges, as this gives us a great way of attracting more members to our Team...plus we get to show our strengths as a Team by (hopefully) doing well in each one.

PS: I have moved lots of topics into this section where they are relevant...as you can see, we've always been happy to take part in Challenges...and long may that continue ;-)

WCG Challenge of Nations 2018

Post by UBT - Timbo »

HI all

UBT has been invited, by another team, namely "Canada", to take part in the WCG Challenge of Nations 2018, which takes place from 22nd-29th September.

Here's the message invite:
Your team, UK BOINC Team, on World Community Grid has been invited to participate in a team challenge. The challenge was issued by Canada. The winner of the challenge will be the team that accumulates the most run time between Saturday, September 22 and Saturday, September 29.
Never being one to hide from such challenges, I've accepted the invitation to take part, on behalf of the Team.

So, if anyone wants to get involved, please ensure you generate some WCG Points between the respected dates.

Please note: This Challenge uses your CPUs for the sub projects.

regards
Tim

Hi

Thought I'd give this a go as I haven't done it for months and they pester me occasionally to do some!
I tried to download some this morning but didn't wait around to make sure some downloaded - they didn't! I only chose Microbiome Immunity Project, Smash Childhood Cancer, and OpenZika to start and there were no WUs available. Selected all projects instead and got some.

Just as a heads up...

Microbiome Immunity Project showing as taking 1.5 hours - (yes they downloaded later!)
Mapping Cancer markers is at 3 hours
Outsmart Ebola at 8.75 hours
Open Zika at 2.5 hours.

No idea what the credits are like, but probably just as poor as they used to be!

Hi all

This Challenge is not an "open" Challenge - ie not everyone can join - it is one we've been specifically invited to.

And thus far, the ONLY teams involved (ie thsoe who've been invited and then accepted the Challenge) are:

Canada
UK BOINC Team
BOINC@AUSTRALIA
SETIKAH@KOREA
Team China

The following teams have been invited but haven't accepted yet:

Russia
BOINC.Italy
SETI.Germany
SETI.USA
BOINC@Poland
L'Alliance Francophone
Dutch Power Cows
Czech National Team

(You might note that all of these teams are FB League One teams - I'm not sure if that is relevant in any way - maybe it's Canada's plan to get other teams to do this Challenge and then they won't do so well in the forthcoming Sprint ?? )

So, there's a good chance we can do well in this. But bear in mind, it runs until 29th Sept and hence overlaps with the beginning of Sprint #16.

Of course potentially, the project chosen for this Sprint might be a GPU only one, or it might be a CPU project where we don't have many members crunching already, and hence we might not have much of a chance.

Hi Mike,

I'm going to give this a go. I've only just realised it starts tomorrow (Saturday) as I thought it was starting on Sunday and hence I was going to grab some tasks and then switch off network access and upload the completed tasks after the Challenge starts ;-)

But I've got some tasks now, (of all types) and will see what I can do. :-)

Hi Tim,

Just realised it's run time not credits which makes things easy!

Have you got a URL for this?

Hi Mike

The URL I have is:

https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team ... ngeId=9149

Apologies as I should have mentioned it before

It doesn't appear to be updated in real time, as it is still showing all the teams with 0 seconds - and we should be 10 hours into this Challenge by now.

Edit: I've also just noticed that:

a) "Late Entrants Allowed? No" - so no other teams can now enter - it's going to be a 5 team Challenge ;-)

b) The "Statistics Last Updated: 9/21/18 23:59:59 (UTC)" - so it could that that the team positions might only be refreshed once every 24 hours.

In the light of the above, I've made a link to BOINCstats, showing all 5 teams stats - but of course, BS doesn't update itself very often either - but it at least shows what sort of progress each team has made recently.

https://boincstats.com/en/stats/15/team ... B%5D=20885

regards
Tim

PS: I've not uploaded any completed work yet, so I'll maybe do that tomorrow :-)

Excellent - as I see it, this Challenge is going to be all about the number of CPUs we can bring to bear on this project.

Sadly, Team Viewer has failed me as, for some reason, it has considered my usage to be "commercial" so, I can't use it anymore. :-(

I have found a couple of alternatives I will try out - Chrome Remote Desktop extension might work, or there's also AnyDesk, which I'll try out.

However, I not able to visit my office PC until Monday (as I have other tasks on for this weekend) so I cannot install a different remote access program to try out until then. So, my 32-cores will have to stay on ODLK until I can switch over that machine to WCG on Monday.

Hi all

BOINCstats currently shows the following stats:

(Position is based on descending credits/day figures and NOT overall ranking)

Code: Select all

Posn.	Team Name	Total credit	credit/day	credit/week	credit/month	Average credit

#12	Team China	3,012,770,966	2,519,247	11,901,173	50,909,566	1,694,880

#18	BOINC@AUSTRALIA	889,324,794	932,031 3,308,621	11,823,536	434,419

#23	Canada 1,360,421,434	703,455 3,084,266	11,406,185	406,150

#76	UK BOINC Team	184,845,958	171,258 819,472 2,698,213	102,973

#105	SETIKAH@KOREA	196,368,959	114,792 545,593 2,245,325	75,605
So, as it might be clear, I very much doubt we can win this Challenge and 2nd/3rd place might well be out of reach too - but this Challenge is about run time and not credits...(though I think there is a very close link between the two !!)

Edit: I've just re-allowed Network Activity on my home PC just to see what sort of difference it makes to the Challenge stats figures, which might be updated later tonight - we shall see ;-)

Hi all

As of 1am Sunday (which is 12pm midnight UTC) all the stats for this Challenge are still at zero - so we are in joint 1st place :-)

Will check again in the morning.

Not quite....

A little while back, 3 of us forum members (Chris C and Mark are the others) bought some Intel server boards, which may have been ex-Google. These use dual Xeon 2670 CPUs which have 16 cores each.

In my case, it seemed a better idea to buy a single high density mobo, than to use multiple single or dual core PCs - as there's energy saving as well as space saving considerations. (However, I had to get a server sized case which is about 50% bigger (in all dimensions) than a normal desktop case !!)

The thread that discussed the idea of purchasing them is here:

http://www.ukboincteam.org.uk/newforum/ ... hilit=2670

So, I just use it to bolster up my BOINC support and it helps with earning some extra credits ;-)

Hi all

As WCG haven't updated this Challenges' stats figures so, the next best options are:

1) Look at the stats on the BOINCstats website - I set up a comparison chart = take a look on a previous message (see above)

2) Look at the stats on our WCG Team page:

https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team ... 9TGC4G1RP1

This currently shows a nice increase in the "Run Time (hours)" to almost 6,000 in the past day.

However, the other teams are also doing well, as per their WCG team pages:

Team China = (over 100k)
https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team ... 16RWX2QBN1

BOINC@Australia = (well over 20k, and nearer to 30k)
https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team ... 2MH9NS9PP1

Canada = (between 10k and 15k)
https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team ... =4C21G7R9N

SETIKAH@KOREA = (just over 3k)
https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team ... 3JH13V1TT1

Hi

We got a real update!

https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team ... ngeId=9149
Rank Team Name Current Score
1 Team China 11 years, 244 days, 20 hours, 32 minutes, 37 seconds
2 BOINC@AUSTRALIA 3 years, 87 days, 16 hours, 53 minutes, 46 seconds
3 Canada 1 year, 231 days, 2 hours, 49 minutes, 12 seconds
4 UK BOINC Team 248 days, 22 hours, 20 minutes, 30 seconds
5 SETIKAH@KOREA 128 days, 16 hours, 9 minutes, 3 seconds
Though BURP tasks have suddenly appeared and as they have priority I'm temporarily out!

Hi all

WCG have updated the Challenge stats as follows:

Code: Select all

Rank Team Name Current Score
1 Team China 22 years, 57 days, 5 hours, 25 minutes, 34 seconds (=8087 days...)
2 BOINC@AUSTRALIA	6 years, 258 days, 1 hour, 33 minutes, 45 seconds (=2448 days...)
3 Canada 3 years, 31 days, 5 hours, 40 minutes, 41 seconds (=1098 days...)
4 UK BOINC Team 1 year, 154 days, 2 hours, 32 minutes, 23 seconds (that's 519 days...)
5 SETIKAH@KOREA 249 days, 3 hours, 51 minutes, 56 seconds
As can be seen, we've been crunching for about 47% of the Run Time of Canada - but I've now added my work PC to the Challenge, so that might help a bit...the Challenge runs until this coming Sunday, so there's still time to make an impression.

Hi all

Latest update:

Code: Select all

 Rank Team Name Current Score
1 Team China 32 years, 342 days, 23 hours, 52 minutes, 36 seconds (=12022 days)
2 BOINC@AUSTRALIA	10 years, 91 days, 12 hours, 28 minutes, 17 seconds (=3741 days)
3 Canada 4 years, 357 days, 4 hours, 5 minutes, 11 seconds (=1817 days)
4 UK BOINC Team 2 years, 74 days, 2 hours, 40 minutes, 33 seconds (=804 days)
5 SETIKAH@KOREA 364 days, 22 hours, 40 minutes, 3 seconds
So, UBT is still in 4th place and still at about 44% of the Run Time of Canada, so we're dropping back a bit and that's despite bringing my 32 core PC onto this project.

Hi all

What with being away for most of the end of last week, I never had a chance to publish our final standings for this, so here they are:

Code: Select all

Rank Team Name Current Score
1 Team China 87 years, 62 days, 14 hours, 22 minutes, 53 seconds
2 BOINC@AUSTRALIA	21 years, 332 days, 8 hours, 52 minutes, 28 seconds
3 Canada 14 years, 52 days, 12 hours, 53 minutes, 44 seconds

4 UK BOINC Team 5 years, 234 days, 8 hours, 37 seconds

5 SETIKAH@KOREA 2 years, 212 days, 2 hours, 16 minutes, 26 seconds
So, we ended up 4th out of 5....and some way off the Top 3 places. But fear not - we gave it a shot and it wasn't to be...THIS TIME !!
