2018 Pentathlon

This section is where you can post topics related to Challenges from other websites, such as Formula-BOINC, SETI-Germany and BOINCstats, as well as project challenges such as from WCG, PrimeGrid et al.

As a Team, we really want to engage as many team members with these challenges, as this gives us a great way of attracting more members to our Team...plus we get to show our strengths as a Team by (hopefully) doing well in each one.

PS: I have moved lots of topics into this section where they are relevant...as you can see, we've always been happy to take part in Challenges...and long may that continue ;-)

2018 Pentathlon

Post by scole of TSBT »

I didn't see UBT on the list of registered teams. If that's true and there's anyone who would like to participate, SETI.USA would be glad to have you join them. You can either join to SETI.USA forum and say hello or drop Bryan or Sphynx a PM on the TSBT forum.

Thanks,

Steve

Hi Steve and everyone else ;-)

I've had an email from Rechenkraft.net with an invite, but due to work, I'd not had time to register UBT.

Of course, if anyone does want to get involved with this, and help another team, then please feel free to do so - you will need to "leave" UBT and "join" SETI.USA on each of the chosen projects - however I have now registered UBT as a team on the challenge.

After that it's then just a question of how many people want to dedicate their crunching power to the Pentathlon.

IIRC, this covers 5 named projects over a period of 5th-19th May 2018 - starting and ending at midnight UTC - the start/finish is an hour later if you are on BST (ie 1am).

There's more info here:

https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_penta ... p?&lang=en

The first project selected for the "Marathon" event, is: NumberFields - this event lasts for the entire duration of the Pentathlon

The second project selected, the "Swimming" event is: Universe@home - this event lasts from 5th - 12th May (start and ends @ 00:00 UTC)

The third project, chosen to represent "Sprinting" is: Rosetta - this event lasts from 11th - 14th May (start and ends @ 00:00 UTC)

The fourth project, the "Cross Country" event is: PrimeGrid - this event lasts from 13th - 18th May (start and ends @ 00:00 UTC)

The fifth and final project, the "City Run" event is: Asteroids - this event lasts from 14th - 19th May (start and ends @ 00:00 UTC)

Of course if you do nothing then our "core" members on each of these projects will provide some degree of competition...but, OTOH, if you want to switch to the chosen projects (once they are named) then your additional credits will help quite a bit.

Note also that this does overlap slightly with the next FB Sprint (10-13th May) - so it would be great if one of the chosen Pentathlon projects and the chosen FB Sprint project were the same. :-)

Funnily enough I've just moved a couple of hosts from Amicable to NumberFields purely for Formula Boinc purposes.

Who says men can't multitask, I'll be contributing to TWO competitions at the same time :D

I will be concentrating on FB but where there's an overlap, I'll take it into account.

Hi all

Our team stats for this years Pentathlon are here:

https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_penta ... +Team.html

and the leaderboard is here:

https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_penta ... athlon.php

After 10½ hours, we're in 22nd place (out of 32)....I've been running some tasks on both NumberFields and Universe just to "show willing" at this early stage - over the last week only 7 members (of which Mark and I are on the forum) have earned any credits on NumberFields - while on Universe project, 14 members (just me from the forum) have earned credits.

Hi Tim,

Looks like all the projects have now been announced.

Marathon - Numberfields

Swimming - Universe

Sprint - Rosetta

City run - Asteroids

Cross country - PrimeGrid

Personally, I'm not actively participating in the Pentathlon so I'm pleased to see that the last events won't impact on any projects that we're running for Formula Boinc. In fact, the choice may help us by drawing other teams resources away from the projects we're concentrating on.

Hi Mark

Thanks for the update :-)

Shame there isn't an overlap with this weekends FB Sprint...but as you mention, it could mean that some teams will switch projects for the Pentathlon, which will reduce their output on other projects...and given that the last 2 projects are really "GPU" projects, so for a while we could improve our standing on Moo AFTER the Sprint ends.

We shall see ;-)

As I stated on the FB Sprint post, I have now moved the GPUs and CPUs over to BP.

Hi all

Final standings after all 5 "events":

Marathon event - NumberFields - we started off in 20th place, had a brief time at 19th and ended up 21st.

Swimming event - Universe - we started in 25th place and and slipped down to 29th, which is where we finished.

Sprint event - Rosetta - we started in 18th place today, went up to 17th and ended in 19th.

Cross Country event - PrimeGrid - started in 19th place and ended in 22nd.

City run event - Asteroids - started in 28th, rose to 27th and then back down to 28th.

Overall points: 53 (15 on Marathon, 2 on Swimming, 21 on Sprint, 12 on X-Country and 3 on City).
Overall postion: 25 out of 32

So, THANK YOU to all who contributed...sadly, it wasn't enough to get in the Top 10 or even the Top 20. :-(

I think "must try harder" is the only conclusion I can come to on our performance this time around :-(
