PrimeGrid challenge #3 Yuri's Night Challenge
Hi
The third 2021 PrimeGrid Challenge Series sub-project is from 11-14 April 18:00:00. A short 3 day run on WW - Wieferich and Wall-Sun-Sun Prime Search, which is the last selectable sub-project under preferences.
Been doing a few of these to see how they run.
Both CPU and GPU versions are available for a fixed credit of 12,000 per WU.
Multithreading is recommended as the WUs are long. CPU time on my (average) PC is 380,000 seconds or around 107 hours (4.45 days) for a single CPU core. I've tried 9, 10 and 12 threads and they all return a total CPU time of 107 hours but an actual time of 11.6 hrs, 10.1 hrs and, for 12 threads, about 9 hours per WU. This on a Ryzen 7 1700.
My 3 year old GTX1060s return a time of 72 minutes each.
Doesn't seem to strain the GPU too much as temperature run an average 83 degrees - though a bit warm is normal for my set-up - a fan blow out might be due though! CPU temps are a steady 66 degrees, which is also average for this PC.
Newer, faster CPU/GPU combinations will obviously be different.
As per normal Prime-grid challenges, bunkering is not allowed as only WUs downloaded after the start will be counted.
12 days to the start - let's see if I can remember to post a bump nearer the date.
Mike

Re: PrimeGrid challenge #3 Yuri's Night Challenge
From PrimeGrid
PrimeGrid: Yuri's Night Challenge starts April 11th
The third challenge of the 2021 Series will be a 3-day challenge celebrating the 60th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's history-making venture into outer space. The challenge will be offered on the WW application, beginning 11 April 18:00 UTC and ending 14 April 18:00 UTC.
This is a relatively new subproject here at PrimeGrid, and there are currently no known Wall–Sun–Sun primes! You could be the first to find one!
To participate in the Challenge, please select only the Wieferich and Wall-Sun-Sun Prime Search (WW) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section.
Questions? Queries? Quips? Discuss on the forum thread for this challenge. Best of luck!

Hi Mikee
I'm in, using my GPUs on this...
My CPU's are a bit "old hat" so probably not worth doing these PG CPU tasks, as they might take ages...
regards
Tim

Hi
I'll be mostly using CPUs only as the GPUs get a bit hot when both are running at the same time.
Starts 7PM Sunday

Re: PrimeGrid challenge #3 Yuri's Night Challenge
Just GPUs for me, the CPUs are busy elsewhere (and it'll take too long to configure them correctly for a three day sprint)
Don't seem too demanding, I'm running two at a time on my 1080s and it's just under an hour for two.

Hi All,
I'm in, running on GPUs and CPUs with all real cores multithreading. CPU give a low reward but it all helps.
1 task per GPU as the tasks use 99% on mine, with almost no direct CPU use.
Good luck all.

One hour in and UBT in equal eleventh place with Richard being the only team member to have returned work that counts!

Three hours in:
Not too far off catching L'Alliance, reasonably clear of EVGA although I don't have any historical numbers.
and
Tim joins the party ... and I think we'll need him just to stop Richard scoring 80% of our points!

Re: PrimeGrid challenge #3 Yuri's Night Challenge
Hi Mark
I've actually been crunching these PG Yuri WW tasks for a day or two...but of course it's only tasks that are downloaded AND returned within the 3 day Challenge period that actually count...which is a shame as I've crunched quite a few of these tasks before the start...
And as you say, each task takes about an hour...but with a quorum of 2, some of my post-6pm UTC tasks are in the pending queue, waiting for validation.

regards
Tim

Tim, I think you're OK as PG challenges include immediately the valid pending tasks. They are reported every 15 mins.

Another ten hours and:
UBT catch and pass L'Alliance and [H] ... but only go up one place? Someone else must have shot past all three of us.
and
Still only four UBT participants
Richard passes the ten million mark but drops to less than 75% of the UBT total, what a slacker

10AM
No change in position, not catching those above but pulling away from those below.
and
Richard continues to outpace everyone else in the team.
Mikee sneaks in a couple of tasks to leapfrog TIm.

Re: PrimeGrid challenge #3 Yuri's Night Challenge
Hi Mark
ooops.....I've got 2 hosts with GPUs on this at present...but the office based host was set to "Suspend network activity" and hence had not been contributing to the Challenge at all...

Sorted now, so I might just be able to sneak past Mikee without him noticing

But sadly, I don't think I'll be able to hunt you or Richard down in the time remaining, so I might just have to battle Mikee for 3rd place.
regards
Tim

12 noon
No change, everyone above us is returning more work, everyone below us is returning less work.
and
Richard breaks 1,000 tasks returned, he's running away with it really.
Tim gets his revenge on Mikee, turning into a bit of a scrap

Re: PrimeGrid challenge #3 Yuri's Night Challenge
Hi Tim,

I made the mistake of setting my hosts up early with a one day cache then forgetting to change it before the start. For the first three hours or so I was crunching WU's that weren't eligible for the competition.UBT - Timbo wrote: ↑Mon Apr 12, 2021 12:04 pmooops.....I've got 2 hosts with GPUs on this at present...but the office based host was set to "Suspend network activity" and hence had not been contributing to the Challenge at all...

Re: PrimeGrid challenge #3 Yuri's Night Challenge
Hi All,
PG is my primary project and WW has been my main sub-project for a while. I decided I wanted to make WW a “billion” credit task so have been putting a lot into it lately.
As it’s still cold, the office is nice and warm, but I shall cut back soon.
Still busy feeding cows as there’s no grass yet, so the computer is light relief.

Hi Richard,
That makes sense then although you do have considerable firepower to bring to bear on those poor PG tasks
I know what you mean, yesterday I had the heating on, today I've got all the windows open!
The grass here has a light dusting of snow, bit chilly for your cows
