Hi all,

The 10am update shows:

UBT on:
108,587,528,720

and TSBT on:
108,856,536,445

a difference of just 269,007,725 !!

It's going to happen in maybe 4 hours time !!

Now there's a thought .... :D

Mark
Just a heads up, I hadn't backed off crunching to get the time nearer my guess, campaign #6 has ran out of WUs without me noticing and that's the only project I was crunching (I wanted the next badge :) )

Cache slowly filling up with campaign #4 WUs now :D

Might as well confess now!

Unfortunately my BU machine has to be offline from crunching for much of today, until around 6pm, and then again for most of the day tomorrow.  :(

Hi all,

And just to rub salt into (my own) wound, I got to the office this morning and found one PC was working and the other was off....powered it up and the room filled with the smell of burning !!

Looks like a PSU has failed - and it was connected to my BFL farm....so no credits from that PC from about 1am this morning :(

So, only my "home" farm crunching now, as my mifi unit isn't online (thanks to Vodafone's screw-up)

No  - it's just that my rbox is connected to my old laptop - and that occasionally has to work for it's keep. It's mostly used to drive a high-speed envelope printer - so that's what it's doing right now!  :)

Hi all,

The 12 noon update shows:

UBT on:
108,730,399,958

while TSBT are on:
108,865,193,881

A lead of just 134,793,923.

We could be UK #1 in one hours time, as we are out-crunching TSBT by about 130 million per hour....so, let's see where we are in an hour !!

Hi Tim,

John missed the 11AM update (or the sites didn't broadcast it correctly) so we're still on ~60 million an hour more RAC than TSBT.

It's looking like the 3PM update should be the one :)

... Which means Keith, Mike and yourself didn't change your guesses in time and I'm going to win :D ... Again! :P

Only joking, I'll let them stand

Hi Mark,

As of 1pm, we're now less than 85 million short of the "target".

Assuming a late rush doesn't happen from scole/alez switching back to TSBT, it's looking like a 3pm change over in the UK #1 position.

Happy days are (nearly) back again !!
Latest standings:

Mike with 18:00 on the 11th November
Tim with 19:00 on the 11th November
Keith with 20:00 on the 11th November
Mark with 21:00 on the 11th November
Chris S with 14:00 on the 17th November
Chris with 17:00 on the 17th November
Jerry with 18:00 on the 18th November
If it's a 3pm "result", then Mike should win, shouldn't he ? Or did I miss something ?

Hi Tim,

I make it 14:24 when we'll finally regain the UK number 1 spot, to be confirmed at the 3PM update.

Ah, but you're forgetting rule number 3 from the very first post:
3. Any changes made in the last 24 hours before the target is reached will be retrospectively disallowed and your previous guess allowed to stand.
Mikee changed his at 17:03, you changed yours at 17:55 and Keith changed his at 18:16 so technically, they should all be disregarded and the final, valid guesses would be:
Mark with 21:00 on the 11th November
Tim with 22:00 on the 14th November
Mike with 20:00 on the 16th November
Chris S with 14:00 on the 17th November
Chris with 17:00 on the 17th November
Keith with 21:00 om the 17th November
Jerry with 18:00 on the 18th November
:D

... However, that seems a bit mean so I shall take the moral high ground, know that I won really and accept them as last posted.

Mark.

Hi Mark

Ah - I see how it works....I'd mis-read it, and thought that any predicted time must be at least 24 hours AFTER you actually make the prediction.

But it's no problem...and I think it's a teeny weeny bit unfair of scole and alez to have abandoned TSBT and changed our little compy....though, in the end, it doesn't really matter ;)

Anyways, you set the rules, so your decision is binding... :)

Hi Mark,

It looks like either the BU stats output has failed or John might have an issue with his number crunching...as the 2pm update doesn't appear to have gone too well...BU stats are blank for the last hours credits...but only for UBT - TSBT stats are OK.

But with luck, the 3pm figures will confirm what we think we know.

Tim

Hi Tim,

Your interpretation would work as well, it was mainly to prevent someone waiting until we were almost at the target then nipping in at the last moment. I shall be more clear in the future :)

I think BU updates at the same time as John does so depending on the timings, it sometimes gets missed.

It appears that Scole came back in time for the 2PM update, it shouldn't make too much difference but might push the time back by an hour :D

Hi Mark,

I wouldn't worry about it too much - it's only a few of us who are "competing", so I doubt anyone would have too much of an issue with it - I think the reason for the rule is quite reaasonable. :)

Yup - I just spotted that scole came back - he must be keeping an eye on our forum !! (If so, HELLO scole - why not join UBT ??).

So, maybe the battle will rage on for a little while yet ? ... ;)

Hi all

The 5pm stats are working and these are:

UBT
109,092,775,708

And TSBT are on:
109,031,893,961

So, for now, we are back as UK #1 team. 8)

We'll just have to watch out for scole and alez and see if they put on a rear-guard fight, over the next few hours.

regards and time for a beer methinks :)
Celebratory Tim

Hi all,

I checked out the PC and it WAS the PSU - a 580 Watt jobby, which (IIRC) is less than a year old (and which was working fine until last night). Wonder if the guarantee will still be valid...so I won't open the case as it has tamper-proof seals on it....though you can see through to the pcb as its got a big 120mm fan on the underside.

I've a spare 400W PSU to hand, and the PC works fine with this, so no other problems - but I'll have to curtail any GPU crunching, until a new PSU is obtained.

Now, where did I put that receipt ?

Hi Tim,

Hope you manage to find the receipt, less than a year old isn't a very good return for the money.

I'm sorry I forgot to post a guess of my own, I got as far as noticing that there were mince pies at stake and decided that I rather liked the sound of that, so went and bought myself some instead. :D

Ouch, I've blown a few PSUs over the years, hope it didn't kill anything else when it went.

At this rate the next 3 months could see us gain 3 places, although that's after we've lost 1 to Black Ops.

Welcome to the madhouse Steve,

Thanks for joining up/in etc :)

I like your idea with regards to the winner buying a round for everyone...though our trading currency is packets of Hobnobs rather than beer...though it has the same effect on the waistline !!

But if you can find me some Broughtons "Dark Dunter", then I'll settle for the latter.

Had a bit of a bad week...

Bought some cheap RAM - 1 of the sticks doesn't work...

Bought a risky untested HD7700 for a tenner - doesn't work!

but then...

they've arrived

and all is well with the world again! :-)

Thanks again Mark

Hi Mike,

Excellent stuff - hope your enjoy them.

And you think YOU'RE the only one having a bad week....

1) my van got stuck in gear - seems the gear change cable had come off the gearbox - a common fault on Renault Trafic's (and other derivatives) so had to get a new "clamp" that fits over the gear change cable and keeps it in place. It's a 10 minute fix, but a 20 minute job to get all the muck and grease off with some Swarfega !!

2) I won a NEW Logitech Harmony 350 programmeable remote control on fleabay - it arrived this morning and it's a 300i, not a 350.

3) I think I've got a cold - sore throat and lacking energy

4) Building works at my office which were supposed to take 2 days over last weekend, won't now be finished until this weekend...so, in the meantime my work "farm" is sidelined.

I'm hoping nothing else goes wrong, but I've got a feeling in my bones that come tomorrow, there'll be something else. :(

Hi Mark,

Well today has almost been and gone and (touch wood) nothing bad has happened...so maybe it has passed ?

re: van
Luckily I had just turned a corner and was in 3rd gear and the clutch was still working - so I was able to drive it to my office, get some work done and then had to think about how to move the van later on....

By the time I'd got to the van, another car had parked "nose to nose" with me, and having no reverse gear, meant I had to push the van backwards with one foot on the ground (the other having to be on the clutch, else it wouldn't move at all !!).

It started up OK and clearly doesn't like moving off in 3rd, but it did it. Then spoke to my local garage, who'd not heard of the issue and then I turned to the intrawebby and of course there you'll find all sorts of stuff about this design fault :(

This is the fix:

http://www.matlocksystems.com/

A small piece of U-shaped metal plus a couple of screws which then stop the end of the gear change cable from coming off a single "sprocket" (for want of a better word).

What they don't show in the video is that this "fix" doesn't require the removal of the gearbox....but they also don't show that a number of hoses are in the way either, when the clamp is fitted "in situ".

Anyways, it's fixed now and I've got transport again :)

re: cold
Throat is much better today and with luck I'll be clear by tomorrow - lots of Vitamin C and higher fluid (non-alcoholic) intake usually makes it go away !!

regards

What they don't show in the video is that this "fix" doesn't require the removal of the gearbox....but they also don't show that a number of hoses are in the way either, when the clamp is fitted "in situ".

Anyways, it's fixed now and I've got transport again :)

re: cold
Throat is much better today and with luck I'll be clear by tomorrow - lots of Vitamin C and higher fluid (non-alcoholic) intake usually makes it go away !!

Hi Tim,

Isn't trouble supposed to come in threes? Looks like you should be safe for a while now, you've exceeded your quota! :D

Fortuitous timing then with the van. It's usually the same with car repair videos and manuals, they state something simple like "undo the bolt and slide the mounting off, re-assemble in the reverse order" which translated means: spend an hour trying to get a socket onto the end of the bolt then discovering you can only turn it by 2 degrees at a time due to other cables and parts, bandage up your knuckles after catching them on the sharp edges around the mounting, fetch a large lump hammer to then persuade the mounting to move at all then discover that it won't fit back on afterwards.

Good luck with your cold, I'm going to stick to my method ... I don't have a cold at the moment but best to prevent one happening in the first place :D

Trying to overtake TSBT for UK#1 at Bitcoin is a bit of a struggle!

Hopefully in the next few hours we'll get there.

Hi Mikee,

According to Johns stats, UBT claimed the BU UK number one spot at the 07:00 update with 110,203,129,077 credits to TSBTs 110,183,986,790 credits.
