Hi Chris

So, they are valuing the cars.com domain name as being worth 34% of the sales price of the parent company....which sold for approx £2.5 billion.

mmmmmmmmmm...OK, so I will value the ukboincteam.org.uk at, let's see,....£260.87 million....which represents about 0.000000001% of my total nett worth...as I've been told I'm "priceless" !!!

regards ;-)

LOL.

I wonder what my domain would be worth; 6 letters on the .com domain extension.

Especially to a software development company.

I am sure you can work what domain it is.

Hi Chris

hehehehehe....

Way, way back in 1992, I was working for KEF (loudspeakers) and I convinced the board of directors that registering their domain name would be a great idea, esp as the internet is "going to be huge" - (my own words at the time).

The board begrudgingly allowed me to register "kef.com", but I had to pay for it on my own credit card !!

Of course, that is a unique brand name, so unless "Kelloggs", "eBay" and "Ferrari" merge, then it's never ever going to sell for big bucks....but I can look back and think "I did that!".

I remember from 2003 there were loads of .com available, now there are practically no 1-6 letter .com's available - all are pretty much taken.

Pity you did not register some generic domains:

domains.com, sex.com, bikes.com, property.com, etc; You would be Billionaire+ now.

Hi Chris

I seem to remember having to FAX a form through to the registrars to show the company name and company registration number, in order to "prove" that we had a right to a three letter .com domain name.

So, that put me off registering other names...but times have changed and it's a far more commercial market place for domain names...and indeed some weird company names have started appearing, simply because the domain name is available ;-)

On the subject of domains, when I had my last business I decided I wanted a catchy name so I bought bazinga.co.uk and whilst working on the site one night I checked out trade marks. Turned out CBS only bought the trademarks for bedsheets and t-shirts/clothing here in the UK, so i spent the £20 and got a few in my name, toys, costumes etc.

Well needless to say their lawyers came calling but i stood firm and eventually sold them back to CBS for a lot more than I paid for them. I still owned the domain though until I sold my business last year....I really wish i'd kept it as it'd be worth a pretty penny now.

Interesting.

I don't know if everyone is aware, but hundreds of new TLDs were released in the last few years meaning some killer domains are now available. I guess if you sit on them for 20 odd years the current situation may come about again.

Ones that come to mind:

.team
.tech
.shop
.london
.pro
.zone
.computers
.vision
.consulting
.forsale
.supplies
.bar
.pub
.art
.media
.reviews
.digital
.guide
.expert
.solutions
.support
.systems
.technology
.holidays

etc

Hi Chris,

All I've been getting is a load of spam from some of the new domain name suffixes...namely:

.date
.bid
.faith
.win
.download
.party
.link
.website
.vip

So, all of these have gone in to my "spam blacklist" filter.

And I'll be adding the one's you've listed too !!

I think there is quite a difference between the ones I listed, and you have.. :?

But - Err, okay, cool.

Just so you know there were about 1,000 new domain extensions released in total since 2015.

Personally I would just use an effective spam filter service such as GMail; it also stops viruses and malware..

Each to their own though, I guess.
