Project Dolphin

Post by UBT - PaulT »

This is an old project that I participated in years ago which is basically just a keystroke counter.   It requires running a small client program which just counts every keypress you make (please note it is NOT a key logger) and reports back to the main server every hour so no user interaction is needed.

I have set up a team, if anyone wants to join in the please do so.

Excuse the great depths of my ignorance but why do they want to count keystrokes?

I think we're getting to the point of CPU power being so great that it's no longer an issue of "do I have enough power to run this (single) application" - more like "this PC is so powerful, it can do ALL of this all at the same time".

Expect to see more proglets like this coming - Instant Messnger is a similar program - it just sits in your Tray until a friend logs on and then you can be "chatting" as soon as you want. Great for keeping in touch, but can be a real "time-waster". I switched mine off, as friends were always expecting me to be available....and I've got work to do...!

I had another program that monitored the bit rate of send/receive over my modem line - it was great over the modem as you could tell what speed you were connecting at and hence if it was worthwhile to send/receive a big email to/from some-one. This was in the days of 33k and 56k modems that could connect at 9.6k or 14.4k and you wouldn't know it   - and then a big email might try to download and take ages   ....and bearing in mind that this was when using the phone line for (slow speed) data was expensive.

Hell, we used to be told not to telephone people until after 1pm, as it was expensive to call people in the mornings...!

regards,

Tim

It sounds  bit like when I first got a blackberry and it also notified me when an email arrived and I would immediately look at it and respond before I learned to switch off the alerts and only check when I wanted to and not when someone else wanted to grab my attention. 8)

At the moment my CPU is busy working on the current 4 projects all the time and I prefer to have the vaguely smug feeling of potentially doing some good  :angel7:

So I think I will give this one a miss for now :walk:

What I've found really interesting is the number of keystrokes I do when I'm online.  TBH I didn't realise I typed as much as I do.  I blame thre UBT Chatroom but don't tell Darren & Tim ok  :D

I thought I didn't do much clicking because I'm still not totally into the touchpad and I've always used keyboard shortcuts anyway ;) but I was quite startled when I looked at my figures.

Why not join to discover how much you use the keyboard? You may be suprised!

I've joined the project for a laugh. It'll be interesting to see just how many keystrokes I really make. Perhaps it'll persuade me to use even more shortcut keys than I do already. I know that that won't contribute so many keystrokes to the stats, but at least I'll be working more efficiently...

Actually, what I think would be more interesting is to measure the cumulative length of the mouse movements made. Even more interesting would be the number of keyboard -> mouse (or vice versa) transitions made.

WTG Gregory, that's the attitude  :D

If you're interested in your amount of clicks you do please consider joining the UBT team at WhatPulse

Where on the WhatPulse site does it say that it measures clicks and well as keystrokes?

EDIT: Oh, I see that the stats page shows clicks as well. I'll look at downloading this some time later today.

Right, problems already!

I'm trying to register on WhatPulse, but one of the *Required Fields* is 'Initial Pulse Profile'. What is this? Do I need to join the forum first and get a 'Profile' before registering?

Thanks :)
