Bitcoin Utopia

The section for those minor projects that are around, such as CAS@home, Yafu, Yoyo@home and also including those that are "non-intensive", such as GoofyxGrid, WUProp, which can both be run in the background.

When I was crunching BU, it was working out very roughly at about 1 million credits per GHz of ASIC capability. A single Raspberry Pi with a USB stick connected could quite easily turn out several million credits a day for a total outlay of less than £30 and running off 10 watts :)

Nowadays with the big THz machines, a billion a day from one machine is quite normal :o

Darn...
The PSU on the 10 port USB hub just died. I've got 4 ASICs running off it and it's been fine for a couple of years now so it did quite well. It'll run 2 ASICs unpowered but as they do get quite hot and I don't want to stress the motherboard USB PSU I've decided to take a short break until I get a new PSU/Hub.

Unlucky Mike but as you say, two years lifetime isn't bad for it.

Enjoy your break :)

New hub and psu arrived today but had a euro 2 pin plug on it - oops! When I looked at the listing that's exactly the same - should have looked harder. Was going to rewire it to fit but thought better of it so I'll get an adaptor which is a bit safer and only a couple of quid!

Well that was a waste of money! New PSU doesn't work at all - no output! Going to have to wait a while to source a PSU as we'll be away for a while. At least Sztaki is behaving itself!

Hi

Just got this ...
Bitcoin Utopia: The future of BU
Hello!

After these four campaigns are all finished, Bitcoin Utopia will close down, at least for temporarily. This should happen in the early summer.

Thanks for all these years and thanks for understanding!

Henri.

Hi Mike

Yup - I saw this on the BOINC Manager "Notices" page.

I guess I should put in a bit of a burst on BU then...just a question of re-setting up the hardware ;-)

Would be nice to have a final "hurrah" on BU just to keep a few other teams at bay on the overall statistics.

Might turn out to be good news after all, our Northern neighbours were starting to close up a bit, I was just about to start clearing off the cobwebs.

Hi
Bitcoin Utopia: C #5 work generation has now ended
I have stopped the work generation for Campaign #5. Thanks for all the hard work!

Henri.
This is the last of the current runs of tasks. There are just about 5000 various WUs in Campaign 5 left, after that no more until Henri decides to restart after the summer. Though it may be that he decides not to restart...

Might be time to start looking at personal mining rather than BU now the price of Bitcoins is increasing again?

Hi Mike

BU was taking a small amount out of the BTC's earned to cover themselves, but for some reason, I guess they weren't getting enough, esp after they made their own campaign, instead of taking a small percentage out of each campaign.

And indeed, stopping BU now makes slightly less sense...but doing some personal mining does seem to be the right sort of thing to do, if one has the hardware "just lying around" and the BTC value is going up :o

Just tried to download the last WUs ... too late ... all gone!

Hi
Well this looks permanant! All websites are no longer available (server not found), BOINCStats have all ready sent the project to 'retired projects' status.

Hi Mike

That's a shame - I guess that all they have done is re-directed the IP address to a different server and then shut down their existing one.

https://who.is/whois/bitcoinutopia.net

(I assume the above "owner details" are nothing to do with their original "base" in Finland).

So, no stats, no messageboards (which also stops people criticising their decision to close) and no useful info on the projects they have supported.

Shame, but it has happened before with other projects, and at least they did give a warning.

Time to start mining for ones-self !!

regards
Tim

Hi

Surprising thread?

Just having a look around and every now and again I'll see if the site is up again and I just happened to go to BOINCStats and found this ...

https://boincstats.com/en/stats/144/user/list/0/0/0

Now where are they getting these credits from?

Hi Mikee,

Didn't you know they'd started up again?! :D

It's because Boincstats haven't updated their tables since BU stopped exporting stats.

If you check any individuals "last 40 days" then the data was frozen on June 15th 2017 when BU closed - https://boincstats.com/en/stats/144/use ... 0/lastDays
