Rakesearch problem

Post by UBT - Chris Suddick »

Hi,

I'm trying to get Rakesearch going and I'm getting a problem I've not seen before. When I do an update I get an error in the Event Log:

23/03/2020 16:08:52 | Rake search of diagonal Latin squares | Message from server: Your app_info.xml file doesn't have a usable version of RakeSearch for rank 10.

I've run this before without any problem. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Chris.

Hi Chris,

Have you ran it recently?

They ran out of 9x9 squares nearly a year ago and changed to 10x10 squares instead. I imagine your app_info file still references the old 9x9 application?

I don't think an app_info file is essential so you could try just renaming it?

Hi Chris

Were you running the Optimised Rakesearch app (as per this messageboard topic):

https://rake.boincfast.ru/rakesearch/fo ... =39&sort=5

This was a tweaked version for the R9 tasks and currently the project is on R10 and there is no optimised version for this.

I would close down BOINC Manager, maybe make a backup copy of your Rakesearch app_info.xml file (that's in your Rakesearch data folder) and move it somewhere safe, then start up BOINC Manager and just reset the Rakesearch project.

regards
Tim

I tried getting rid of the app_info file but it made no difference. So, I decided on a more lateral approach and thought "f*ck it" and decided to do Rosetta instead.

Thanks for this. I've installed it and I am giving it a try.

I'm a bit concerned that the author says his runtimes are reduced from about 3m down to just under a minute. My runtimes on the original app are about 8 hours. I shall post an update later when the new app has done some work.

Well, the first one took 49m 13s so that does seem to be a slight improvement.

What CPU are you running Rake on that takes 8 hours to do a task? That seems incredibly long.

Chris' computers aren't hidden on Rakesearch - https://rake.boincfast.ru/rakesearch/re ... e=4&appid=

He's right 7 - 8 hours per task previously! :o

Mark,

Your use of the plural (computers) is completely superfluous. I am a poor impecunious pensioner with just the one. It is a quad though and I thought it was quite fast at 3.3GHz. It has 6Gb of memory as well which I've always thought was sufficient. Maybe I should upgrade? How much would one of those 64 core Xeon thingies cost?

Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2120 CPU @ 3.30GHz [Family 6 Model 42 Stepping 7], 2 cores, 4 threads.
You could probably build an AMD Zen 2 system for a reasonable cost right now. Prices have come down a bit with Zen 3 coming out at the end of the year.

Well there were two listed ... or maybe it's me seeing double again :)

3.3GHz is faster than my Xeons and 6GB of RAM would allow you to run even the demanding Rosetta tasks, not a bad machine.

Should you wish to upgrade, you could get a Xeon Phi for $2,000 - $4,000 but they're half the speed of yours so I wouldn't bother :)

You'd be better off with AMD, I recently priced up an older generation 1900X system, £500 for 16 threads at 3.8 GHz. Ask Damien about 64 core machines, too pricey for me!

Those times [B@P] Daniel posted in that link I gave must be for 1% of the task. So multiply them by 100 to get how long it takes to do a task.

His computers aren't hidden. Here is his Rakesearch page: https://rake.boincfast.ru/rakesearch/re ... e=4&appid=

Well, normally, I churn out about 2k points per day of Rakesearch but with the optimised app I did 9.2k yesterday. Quite an improvement. Thank you to ChelseaOilman for pointing it out.
