Sztaki closing

Good at maths? Then why not figure on helping these projects - BURP, Citizen Science Grid, Collatz, Enigma, Gerasim, Moo! Wrapper, NFS, NumberFields, primaboinca, PrimeGrid, Sztaki, WEP+M2)

Sztaki closing

Post by Woodles » Wed Apr 04, 2018 8:56 am

From their front page:
SZTAKI Desktop Grid is going to close down officially on May 31. We will try to keep the server open as long as possible afterwards if needed, so all in-progress work units can be finished. Next, the project home page will be replaced by a static site containing the description and results for the applications of the project, and will be updated when we get new results from the scientists. We would like to thank you for your support and dedication for SZDG throughout the years!
If you have any targets on Sztaki, now's the time to try to achieve them .... although there's no work at present :(

Hi Mark

Thanks for the info - that's a real shame...though Sztaki (as a project) has been around for a long time !!

Somehow I doubt that we will get any points from this project on the Formula BOINC challenge this year as there have been just less than 800,000 credits awarded (in total) this year - far less than the 2,000,000 required (unless something dramatic happens in the next 2 months or so !).

I was hoping to at least get to 100,000 personal credits, but that's unlikely now. :-(

regards
Tim

Hi Tim,

There's about 2,500 tasks still in progress but with them only scoring ~6-8 credits each, that's not going to make up the shortfall on Formula Boinc unless new work is produced (which I think is unlikely)

Best outcome would be everyone else aborting their work and you managing to grab enough re-sends to get to your 100k.

At least we'll go out as UK number one :)

Hi

There's a possiblilty they might get to 2 million! Looking at BOINCStats the project is giving about 33,000/day - call it 50 days to end of May that's 1.65 million, plus the 834,000 will take it to 2.48 million - bit of a haul but possible providing things stay stable til then.

Hi Mike

I think it will depend on whether the project is creating any new tasks to be crunched or just churning out older tasks that haven't been properly validated. If it's the latter then the number of tasks they can issue will be limited. :-(

But we shall see ;-)

I joined this project about a month ago and just recently got my first tasks. I'm now up to the heady heights of about 120 so I don't think I'll have much of an impact on things but I shall leave it open until the end just in case.

Chris.

Nicely done Chris. It's been hit and miss for a few months now, virtually died last summer and just woke up again now to inform people that it's closing!

Every credit helps though, I expect to see you shooting up the tables :D

Hi

6 weeks to go and Sztaki is at 1,168,501 credits. Might just be on target to reach 2 million - Xtremesystems in league 2 seem to be doing well with 261,255. Gonna be close!

Up to 1.2 million this morning. hopefully it'll make the two million mark as we're virtually assured of at least 18 points if it does.

Hi Mike,

I'd noticed that. I don't know how they're managing it as I can only get a few workunits a day!

... and passed by Seti Germany so down to third place in Formula Boinc :(

On the plus side, it looks like it will probably make the 2 million mark in time to count so at least we'll get 15 points :D

Hi

Sztaki hit 2 million tonight - 3 weeks to go - will we keep 15 points?

Hi Mikee

Well, we've gained 15 points on Sztaki and gained 10 points on the last Sprint...so that makes a gain of 25 points...and yet we're still on 178 points overall...I'd have thought we'd have more points than that?

Have we lost out on some of the other projects recently? Maybe Mark has the answer? ;-)

Hi Mike,

I have 17 in pending so that should be another massive 91 credits when they clear :D

I also have another 27 in progress. They're very hard to get so I think we might be alright with our 45k lead, that's about 8,500 tasks that AnandTech need to get more that us.

Don't stop crunching though!

Hi Tim,

I don't have all the numbers to hand but this time last week we were on 170 points so we've gained eight overall.

Yes, we've gained 10 from the sprint and 15 from Sztaki but lost 9 on Numberfields (a popular project at the moment due to the Pentathlon) Looks like we've lost a couple on NFS as well.

I'll let you know tomorrow where the other six points have gone.

Hi Tim,

OK, the story is:

29/04 UBT had 160 points
The Amicable Numbers sprint finished - 170 points.
UBT then gained two points for Moo, gained 15 points from Sztaki and lost nine points on Numberfields -
178 points.

All correct I'm afraid.

HI Mark

Thanks for the update - with hindsight, it's obvious that the Pentathlon would have an effect as teams clambered for credits...and where we don't have enough "firepower" so those projects would suffer...hence we lost lots of positions on Numberfields.

Sadly that project is the Pentathlon marathon project so there'll be no let up for us, until after 19th May, when that challenge ends. :-(

Maybe we need to target some other projects whilst those teams concentrate on the Pentathlon?

Any suggestions?

regards
Tim

Hi Tim,

True, before the Pentathlon started we were one of the top producing teams with ~50k a day and only a couple of teams were reaching the 100k mark. Now, all the top teams are posting multi million scores daily and UBT plummeted! Still, we'll fight back when the interest has waned :)

At least the first two individual disciplines (Universe and Rosetta) shouldn't hurt us too much as we're already out of the points in them :)

As far as alternatives are concerned, NFS has just yielded a place and could be shored up, TN-Grid isn't one of our better projects but no-one else seems bothered about it either if you fancy a sneak attack? We're chasing Overclock on VGTU and S.USA on YAFU so those also would also be time well spent.

Of course, it could all come undone depending on what the last two Pentathlon events are.
