Primegrid World Animal Day Challenge

This section is where you can post topics related to Challenges from other websites, such as Formula-BOINC, SETI-Germany and BOINCstats, as well as project challenges such as from WCG, PrimeGrid et al.

As a Team, we really want to engage as many team members with these challenges, as this gives us a great way of attracting more members to our Team...plus we get to show our strengths as a Team by (hopefully) doing well in each one.

PS: I have moved lots of topics into this section where they are relevant...as you can see, we've always been happy to take part in Challenges...and long may that continue ;-)

Primegrid World Animal Day Challenge

Post by hgblade »

The latest Primegrid challenge starts on Friday Oct 4th. Here are the details:

"A 5 day Challenge is being offered on PrimeGrid's The Riesel Problem (LLR) application. To participate in the Challenge, please select only the The Riesel Problem (LLR) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section. The challenge will begin 4 October 2013 18:00 UTC and end 9 October 2013 18:00 UTC. Application builds are available for Linux , Windows and MacIntel 32 bit and 64 bit. CPU's with AVX capabilities will be significantly faster than the ones without, as this instruction set allows for more computing power.

ATTENTION: The primality program LLR is CPU intensive; so, it is vital to have a stable system with good cooling. It does not tolerate "even the slightest of errors." Please see this post for more details on how you can "stress test" your computer. WU's will take ~6 hours on fast/newer computers and 12+ hours on slower/older computers. If your computer is highly overclocked, please consider "stress testing" it. Sieving is an excellent alternative for computers that are not able to LLR. :) "

Hi

Sounds like an interesting idea.....I wonder if my old 3Ghz dual-core P4 might be fast enough for it....?

Sadly, my new i7 octo-core isn't ready for crunching yet, else I'd have put that to the task - I might be able to have it up and running towards the end of this particular period though - and if the LLR is particularly intensive, it might be good to help run the i7 in a bit :-)

regards and thanks for the heads up

At least we're on the board! I've got 8 tasks running, 1 of which will complete this evening and the others at various times in the early hours of tomorrow! Doesn't look like I'll get any more out before the challenge finishes, though.

You might just make it :D The half way point will be tomorrow at 07:00 so any work units finished by then should have time to complete.

The workunits I've completed so far, and the ones in progress, do seem a bit (very) variable time wise though, so you won't know until the new ones have started how long the might take.

Hi all,

I've got 2 PC's on this - a 2.4GHz Quad core and a 3GHz Dual core - the Quad core WU's seem to be taking 24+hours, while the Dual core WU's might take around 48+ hours.... :-(

Hopefully, what credits I do get, will be quite high, if they are based on the number of hours it'll take to complete them....I've completed 10 WU's thus far - 6 WU's for 7629.99 worth of credits - with 4 more WU's "pending" at time of posting this.

Also:
If you look at boincstats.com here:

http://boincstats.com/en/stats/11/user/list/12/0/53

you can see that UBT is generating lots of Primegrid credits, though they might not all be Riesel LLR types, that are the one's being "counted" in this challenge.

Tim - I'm banking on that, too. I've got one finished with 1800 credits, 7 more looking like they've between 5 and 10 hours still to go - and they've all been running since the challenge started. Hopefully, as Ian suggested, some WU's are shorter than others and I'll pick up a few shorter ones to get creditted before the end of the challenge!

Hi all,

It looks like I downloaded some TRP LLU WU's too early (before the challenge start date and time) and hence they are NOT being counted. :-(

(I should have read the "in depth" challenge info on the PrimeGrid website instead of only reading the first post in this thread.)

Not to worry - I might still be able to contribute something so it's not too bad.

But if anyone can spare some spare crunching power, then please suspend your other work (if possible) then download AND return some completed PrimeGrid WU's.......

regards

Well, I didn't think it would last - I was wrong.    I've only got two more workunits that are going to finish in time though so I'm still an easy target :(

Not a bad result for the team - well done to all who took part. We only beat the next team by 1000 odd so every work unit crunched for us counted!
