Asteroids download failure

Post by UBT - Chris Suddick »

Over the last few days I've been getting a lot of 'download failures' from Asteroids. Today it has become solid and I can't get a single download to work. My internet seems OK and Einstein is still working so I'm assuming the problem is with Asteroids. Has anyone else got a problem with it?

Hi Chris,

I've not downloaded any Asteroids WU's this week, but it was all OK last week.

Likewise, checking the server status, it all looks tickety-boo:

http://asteroidsathome.net/boinc/server_status.php

Likewise, no related messages in their forum:

http://asteroidsathome.net/boinc/forum_index.php

My guess is if you check the amount of HDD space you have - look in the Boinc Manager "Notices" section and see if Asteroids needs more disk space - as I've had that problem before, where new WU's couldn't be downloaded due to me running out of available HDD space.

I assume you've tried shutting down BM, switching the PC off and back on again and restarting !!

regards
Tim

Tim,

I hadn't thought about the disk space but it turns out that BOINC is using less than 1% of its available space.

I guess I can give my machine a treat sometime today and reboot it. The download failures are still occurring but it's now only about one-third of them doing so. On Saturday I couldn't get a single success for about 4 hours. Einstein, on the other hand, hasn't had a single problem. This is why I thought the problem may be at the server end and why I asked the question.

No matter. It's working (of sorts) and at least Einstein gets a little more run time when Asteroids runs out of work.

You're not alone, i have had around 400 download errors from Asteroids, several others are also reporting the problem on their site.

Kyong, the guy who runs the project , may not be aware of the problem at the moment, he runs the project from another site away from his new home, he has also just started a new job and probably not had the time to deal with it, i'm sure the problem will get sorted at some point and as soon as he is able to look into it.

best regards,

Tom

Hi Chris,

Based on tomo's comments, I just did another search on their forums and lo and behold there are a couple of new postings here:

http://asteroidsathome.net/boinc/forum_ ... php?id=416

and here:

http://asteroidsathome.net/boinc/forum_ ... php?id=418

So, others ARE having a problem.....guess it's down to the admins to sort it out.

regards
Tim

Curiously, when I rebooted yesterday the first update I did for Asteroids resulted in a completely successful download of about 10 units. I thought it had cured it but it is as bad as ever this morning. So far I've had about 6 successful and 40 failures.

This seems to be the latest news from the message boards on the A@H site, seems its a bad internet connection that`s causing the download errors. so the problem may persist for a while, until the servers are re-located or a better internet connection  is sorted.

Seem to be getting a lot of download errors for the last few hours. Anyone know if there's a problem with the datasets being sent out?

He does not have the best internet connection right now, he had to move his setup a month or so ago and is now running it out of his apartment. He will move it to a better place again in the future.

Asteroids at home seems to have sorted out their problems and there is now lots of work available and, so far, without any download failures. Fill yer boots, chaps.

Yup - fine for me, although, I have only downloaded one - on to the Pi, and even though you get the credits, it has taken just over 55 hours for 480 credits - not the best...
