New app available

Post by UBT - Halifax-lad »

Just been reading up on the forums today of all projects (has been awhile since I did that).

Anyway, Einstein@Home has a new "power users" app, to be used at your own peril of course

see here for more info

I've downloaded and unpacked the file, but not sure which bit to copy into the Einstein BOINC directory? :)

it looks to be similar to the seti optimised apps, which would mean you stop boinc, copy all of the files into the project/einstein folder and restart boinc

Just done it. Restarted BOINC Manager and it now reads, 'Found app_info.xml; using anonymous platform', for both Seti and Einstein! 8)

Now I've got to get some Einstein WU's!

Don't forget to report back how it works, looks like from other posts it speeds up the processing by a fair wack compared to Einsteins standards

Well I'm a single core cruncher so I definitely can't compare machines or even cores on the same machine. But I have a good idea how long a normal Einstein WU takes, so I'll keep you posted!

I'd definitely be interested to know how much quicker it is as Einstein WUs do tend to be bigger and slower than most others I run on my meagre PC.  The SETI chicken soup opti app helped me considerably, so here's hoping...!

I've had problems with this. The first WU aborted after 5%, so I detached from Einstein, reattached and reloaded the app. Since then all I've got is this;

Detach, exit boinc, restart boinc, re-attach, exit boinc, install opt app...

Boinc is a bit thick with optimized apps, when you detach it still keeps info cached about that app and tries to download it from the server, if you re-attach.
Exiting boinc and restarting it should clear it out.

Cheers, NaRyan! I've done all that, but now I'll have to wait a while to get any WU's as my cache runneth over with Milkyways!

Unfortunately this didn't work. I'm still getting the 'file not found' message, as above. Any more thoughts on this? :?

Update: I've just detached from Einstein, closed and reopened BOINC Manager, then reattached to Einstein. Then I've downloaded a WU without loading the app, and it worked first time!

Conclusion: Either my 'puter doesn't like the app, or I'm doing something wrong! So I'll crunch a few WU's and then try the app again

I thought I'd do a few Einstein wu's while waiting for the PG thingy. When I opened 'new work' I got this message,

Code: Select all

06/11/2008 16:31:21|Einstein@Home|Message from server: To get more Einstein@Home work, finish current work, stop BOINC, remove app_info.xml file, and restart.
06/11/2008 16:31:21|Einstein@Home|Message from server: No work sent
Seems someone at Einstein doesn't like the app! :?

Found this bit of news from the Einstein website:

Code: Select all

Jul 22, 2008
We are reaching the end of the current analysis run and expect the last workunits of S5R3 to be generated around Aug 1.
Participants will probably experience an increase of the downloads necessary for the remaining S5R3 workunits to be processed.
Users with low bandwidth will probably want to suspend the project for some days.
Users of Beta- and Power-Apps should be aware that they will not get tasks of the upcomig S5R4 run with these S5R3 Apps.
Old news I know, but it explains the message I received!
