Off on Summer School for a Week

Post by UBT - Halifax-lad »

At midnight tonight I'm off down to Brighton for a week of summer school as Sussex University to study SXR103 - Practising Science

Lots of cool things include:

* Geological field trip at Birling Gap & Newhaven west cliffs (including ecology)

* Lab work - radioactive materials & rocks (use of Geiger counters

* Lab work - metals in water (spectroscopy)

* Lab work - Gamma radiation

* Research project on aluminium

and many more cool things

Nice 12hr days of study with getting up early in the morning just to go get breakfast (I hate mornings)

BOINC will be left on whilst I'm away so that it can participate in the Mega-Mini Summer Crunch

I think it is January when I find out the results of how I did, there is an ECA (End of Course Assessment) that you take home with you, which is marked once submitted to see how you have done.

Will probably get mine done whilst waiting for the coach after school is over, got 8 hrs to sit in the coach station.

Currently battling with the suitcase trying to show it who's boss, I think everything apart from the kitchen sink is in there  :lol:  :lol:

<snip>

Have a lovely trip down to sunny Brighton - watch out for the nudist beach and all the gorgeous girlies sunning themselves. (you lucky b******)...!

Not too much ice-cream either. Bad for the calorie intake...!

See you soon,

regards,

Tim

Well been asleep all day so feeling quite awake now.

The Week a way was excellent, the trip down there and back up again was a bit of a nightmare.

I'm glad I went to Sussex Uni and not Edinburgh met a lot of new people down there and became very good friends with most of our group. I suppose that is what happens when you end up spending 16 - 18 hours a day with each other.

The days consisted of breakfast around 7am - 8:45am most of us usually met up on a grassy banking before we went in there for the slop. Then followed by study at 9am up until lunch at 12:30 - 13:45, then back to study from 2pm - 5:30pm. At that time it was dinner time then time to relax and socialise

There were some night courses we had to go to luckily there was only 2 of them and our group also had to do them on the 1st 2 days there which was good as it meant the rest of the week we would finish studying at 5:30pm.

We went out on a field trip to a few cliffs to look at the rocks and plant life around this area, all ended up with a tan from this activity, was in the sun for around 8 hours. Then the rest of work was made up of Chemistry, Biology & Physics Introductions. Creating microscope slides with plant cells, analysing spectral lines emissions from various chemicals been burnt, looking at more rocks in the lab and also using low level radiation generators.

The final half day was a poster presentation to another group on Aluminium, my group did Aluminium and its uses as a catalyst. The group judging ours have no scientific background which none of us found out until the end of the week. Slightly unfair as we were told to aim our posters at S103 students (S103 - Discovering Science), which meant none of them had a clue about what we had wrote. There posters were rubbish and not even on topic.

Food was OK, not the best but could have been worse, I suppose that's what you get when there are over 550 OU students on campus doing various different courses.

Went down to Brighton on the last night for some real food as had forgotten what it looked like and then also went for a few drinks.

The week consisted of drinking various amounts of alcohol (never too much I must add), either in the campus pubs, from Tesco's then sitting on a banking or from Brighton its self.

The last day was the worst & the best, none of us wanted to leave each other but we were all looking forward to going back to our homes and life's at the same time. Needless to say we all have each others Email addresses so can keep in touch that way.
