October 7, 2007 Version 1.06: MilkyWay@home works on Windows!
I just released version 1.06 of the application, and this will now run on windows unlike before. In addition to working on windows, it also correctly handles checkpointing. This means it won't crash if you suspend it and resume it later. The only platform that has yet to upgrade to 1.06 is mac, but that should be up tomorrow. Now everyone should be able to get some credits. I'll do my best to get some work up on the server real soon, and we should be working on some real problems really soon!

October 4, 2007 Project Definition
I just wanted to let everyone know that we've got one of the project scientists checking out the boards for now, and he has posted what exactly our project is doing. You can check it out in the MilkyWay@home Science message board. I'll try to prod them into making a web page with all that info on there so I can put a link to it on the main page, but at least for now you can check that out to get an idea of what we are doing.
No work yet but according to the message boards the developer is going to start work generation very soon.

Milkyway have just released some Crunch3r optimised apps that complete in about 1/3 the time and still award the same fixed credits.
My AMD xp2800+ is now being granted 45 credits/hour  :shock:

Yes, 20 WUs at any one time.
but as soon as you upload & report each WU, you'll download another, so that you always have 20 WUs downloaded

They're not separate optimised apps like seti, they're the now standard Milkyway apps.
Just download some WUs and you'll get the new apps

Don't be concerned about the progress meter, mine takes 8:26 to get to 10% and then completes in 9:46, tis as expected according to Travis@Milkyway.
At least there is a progress meter now :D

Anybody running 64bit Linux should wait till Crunch3r does his magic, probably sometime tomorrow

Done all that for the x32 version! Lots of strange hieroglyphs on the restart!!

All seems to be working OK! :D

But when I click on 'About', it shows I'm still running v5.10.30, but my BOINC Manager page shows 6.1.0 in the corner of the page. Now do I upgrade when BOINC release a new version, or do I stay with Crunch3r's version?  :)

Great, so all my machines will have shut down with nothing to crunch for 12 hours till I get back, the first time I leave them connected when I am out is also going to be the last (the lure of 140 credits an hour on the dual cores was too strong to resist). :cry:

Milky Way is getting better each day.  The server software has been updated and the work is now more consistent.
I  have set this project as a high priority on my computers with other projects as a 5% backup and find it works well. MW only downloads 2 hours work on a slow single core machine and I can quickly change to other projects if I wish.

The other news about the project is that another UK team may pass us, but more of our team is joining the fun and we have started to match their speed to stop them catching up.

If you have not tried this project then why not give it a go.  The credits are good, the work is short and you have the fun of being part of a team race.

[Edit] the credits have now been reduced from 6.5 to 2.17 per WU.  :cry:

Check your WUs guys

Milkyway have sent out a bunch of WUs that either crash on startup (windows) or hang at 0% (linux)

I suppose the windows WUs will take care of themselves but any stuck linux WUs need aborting

About 31 instant credits per hour

:lol:  :lol:  :lol:  :lol:  :lol:  :lol:  :lol:  :lol:
Just had a look at the message board and look like the next lot of new WU's should be about 5 times longer than normal  :lol:
Also even though they are longer they still speed up after 50%
My 8hr wu took 7 hrs 20 to get to 50% then 45 mins to 100% :lol:  :lol:  :lol:

From what I've just read on the message boards (Mikee's link) it would appear that the credits for a 10hr wu will increase to roughly ten times that of a 10min wu.

The deadline times will be increased fairly soon, but BM should look after (ie, warn you to abort) the wu's with the short deadlines, but you need to finish at least one of the long wu's and report it before BM can do this.

I was going to rant about this and abort all my remaining wu's, but decided to read the message board thread to the end. Glad I did! Too many early posters jumping the gun and accusing MW of 'ripping them off'. Once the admin starts posting things make more sense!

I'm going to keep crunching MW for a while longer and keep an eye on the message boards and the deadlines! :lol:

That peep can be found on most projects message boards moaning that the credits are too high, his last one was Cosmology.
hope the 80 credit to 50 credit reduction was because of "improvements to the app" and not because of him.

Geez yer right about these new MW workunits.
After 1 hour 2 are at 20% and 1 is at 10% :?
Stoopid MW admins. they might have sorted the MW workunit EST runtimes.
As Boinc decided to download 7 of the daft things as it thinks they still take 6.5 mins to run :(

Almost as comical as gpugrids workunits, since it bases it's runtime on your cpu (umm ok)
It est completion at 38 hours per workunit (takes about 11.5 & 12.75 hours), and with a 4 day deadline and getting 4 at a time, Boinc Kind of panics :P.
When I pointed that out over at their forums they sorted the workunit times out a bit :)

2009-01-19: MilkyWay@home - Project News: Code Release and Optimized Windows Apps
A significant number of hosts using optimized windows apps are returning bogus results. We're recommending our users return to using the stock app (until updated, correct versions of these optimized apps are released), because starting
tomorrow these optimized apps will NOT be granting any credit. I've released v11 of the source code, with compilation instructions that'll ensure that an optimized app will be granted credit in the future here. The new released code also has multiple test WUs to check the code against, so hopefully newer optimized versions will not return bogus results; they will also let us
track what applications are and aren't working so we are able to debug our searches and let users know which applications are working.
Unfortunately, the bogus windows apps are so prevalent that it's preventing us from implementing our dynamic WU checking; because the number of bad results is skewing our detection which would result in correct results being labeled as invalid.
We also have no way to update these apps automatically, unlike our own stock app on the server. This is why we've had to take such a drastic measure (not granting credit to any older optimized apps) until this situation is resolved. Again, our
users have until tomorrow to either revert to our stock app or upgrade to an application that uses the new compilation instructions and code, or risk not being granted any credit.
v12 OSX/Linux Applications
January 19, 2009
I've recompiled these yet again -- because people still have been getting strange performance issues. I've used the exact same compilation flags and used the same code from 0.7 (with the exclusion of the code that fixed the memory leak). They've tested fine for me, so let me know if you're having any performance issues with v12.

OK but how do we know if we have a "good" optimised app or not? Sorry to ask such an obvious newbie question or should we all do as Mr Melter has ? and put up with the 5Hr work unit   :pukeright:

The posting is a bit vague as they weren't too sure which ones were causing the problems. I'm assuming that ALL optimized codes will be banned. So back to the stock application for now - 60 minutes on this Windows Intel, 55 on my AMD.

On the plus side it seems some of the members are now going to try and optimize the new apps with the new set of code.  :D

So hopefully it may not be too long before we have another optimized app!

However, for now i will run down the WU cache and detach & re-attach to the project.

its not as bad as it sounds guys.

the new application (v0.12) is exactly the same code as version 0.7 (which was used for the opti apps) with the addition of some new stderr.out which IDs the app.
All the optimisers have to do is give their app a name and recompile.

I'm expecting new opti apps for linux some time tomorrow, petros has already said he's on it :thumbup:
dunno about the windows apps though :?

was 41 mins for 40 credits .....then with app went to 6 mins  for 11 ...now 59 mins for 39  :shock: (on xp 64)
Mind you the p4's are back to normal 1hr17

32 bit linux
SSE_32
SSE2_32
SSE3_32

64bit linux
SSE3_64
SSSE3_64
SSE41_64

type cat  /proc/cpuinfo and look at the flags line for SSE3 (or pni), SSE2 and SSE (sorry, I don't know how SSE4.1 is displayed)

Nothing heard from the windows compilers yet :(
edit
oh yes there is :D
haven't tried them myself yet but they're here
from what I can make out from their forum, its SSE2 & SSE3 for winxp & winxp64

What processors did you put them on Micky?

If it was the P4's then they don't support SSE3. Use CPU-Z to find out if they support it or not.  :)

New Assimilator/Validator
January 20, 2009
The changes are in place for our new assimilator+validator, so this evening at 8pm EST we'll be making the change. The new assimilator+validator is stricter when it comes to checking for WU correctness. Workunits returned with impossible results will be marked invalid and not awarded credit. Additionally, as per the previous news post, non-stock applications not compiled with the latest instructions detailed here, will not be awarded credit. Please update your application to the stock app, or a verified recently compiled app to prevent any loss of credit. The new assimilator+validator contains changes which will allow us to automatically detect bad results, so when we have completed debugging this, credit will also not be awarded to applications which are not returning correct results.

I've now got the windows SSE3 app running at home and I think the problem is that the app_info.xml has the app as v0.11 whereas you probably had v0.12 WUs and it therefore trashes them and downloads a new set against v0.11

Its easy to adjust app_info.xml, just replace all 11s with 12s and rename the app to suit

or even duplicate the <app_version> segment and change <version_num> to 12 (but leave its <file_name> as 11) and then it will support both versions
like this
<app_info>
<app>
<name>milkyway</name>
</app>
<file_info>
<name>astronomy_0.11_SSE3.exe</name>
<executable/>
</file_info>
<app_version>
<app_name>milkyway</app_name>
<version_num>11</version_num>
<file_ref>
<file_name>astronomy_0.11_SSE3.exe</file_name>
<main_program/>
</file_ref>
</app_version>
<app_version>
<app_name>milkyway</app_name>
<version_num>12</version_num>
<file_ref>
<file_name>astronomy_0.11_SSE3.exe</file_name>
<main_program/>
</file_ref>
</app_version>
</app_info>

Update Pushback
January 20, 2009
I'm pushing the update time until sometime tomorrow, because we'd like to have one more update to the windwos application before making the swap. It will happen sometime tomorrow so I'd get your apps updated today.

Assimilator+Validator Updated
January 21, 2009
We've made the change to the new assimilator+validator. All newly generated WUs will not award credit for applications not compiled as per previous posts. In the next few days, we should be doing another update with automatic error checking. As we go through this process I'll post in the news which compiled applications are generating correct results, and which are generating bad results so they can be updated before the automatic error checking comes into place.
Update Tonight 11PM EST
January 21, 2009
The update will be tonight at 11PM EST. All WUs generated after this time will not award credit to applications not compiled with the instructions here. This is your last chance to update your application to stock or a different recently compiled application.

Application v0.15 Released
January 25, 2009
I bet another application version is just what you've all been waiting for, and here it is! (Just kidding). I've put v0.15 on the server for OSX and Linux, and as usual, Windows will be on the way when Dave gets to it. Anyways, the update to v0.14 reduced the number of bad results from a couple in a hundred to a couple in a thousand. I'm hoping v0.15 will be the last of them. I've turned off the code that is denying credits for these bad results, because you guys are still doing the work and it's a problem on our end. In fact if you get a bad result it helps us figure out whats going wrong. :)

The code is in the code release directory as usual. I'd really like to thank our users (and the people making their own compiled code) for putting up with the changes this last week. Once this last issue is sorted out I think the code should remain stable for awhile as Nate will be doing a lot of optimizations across different stripes.

Credits Part 2
January 24, 2009
What it's looking like is MW is probably a bit more sensitive to floating point calculations than some other project (in fact thats almost entirely what it's doing), so the credit changes might have been a bit extreme for older architectures. I'm upping the credit a bit to ~70% of the older level, newly generated WUs should reflect this.
Windows v0.14 Updated

January 24, 2009
Dave has updated windows application to v0.14 as well. Let us know how they're performing.

Credit Level Update
Januray 24, 2009
We've had a lot of performance improvements since when started with the new version of our application (v0.1), and I know this will upset some people, but even our un-optimized stock application is awarding more credit than most other BOINC projects (even their optimized versions). So I'm reducing the awarded credit by half, which should put us in line with most BOINC projects. Feel free to complain in our forums and try to change my mind if this is too much of a change. This should be reflected in the next set of searches we start up.

They weren`t kidding when they said they were lowering the credit :shock: .
It looks more like WCG credit, so it`s bye bye to MW. I`m going to greener pastures.

I was getting around 40 credits per hour per core (Vista) late yesterday.
Now it`s down to 22 an hour.

Gone back to Cosmology, (35 per hour).

Only 21 credits per work unit hour, down from 39/41.

Being an IT thickie, I haven`t a clue what an SSE2 is, but I wouldn`t mind trying one.  :oops:

Sounds like you're not using an optimised app, Rick - just the standard one. To increase throughput and increase credits get yourself an optimised app - see temujin's second post on page 4 of this thread.

For help with sse2/sse3 - see temujin's posting in the "New Crunchathon" thread in the team chat area.

Error with v0.16 windows signature
January 25, 2009
It looks like Dave had a problem with the v0.16 signature file for windows, so I've resigned them and updated the windows app to v0.17. Let me know if these are working.
Stricter Error Checking Tomorrow
January 25, 2009
Since the v0.16 version of the application has fixed the problem with the application returning bad result, tomorrow afternoon I'll be turning back on the error checking that detects impossible results. To ensure that you will be getting credits for all your workunits, update your optimized applications to a version compiled with v0.16. Stock users have nothing to worry about
Is there any link to the latest modified apps.  The one that Temujin listed on the 20th works great in Windoze for AMD cpu's but Intel computers only ask for 1 second of work after finishing any work downloaded after about 6 hours - less time for my Q6600. I have to keep doing a reset to crunch more than 1 wu at a time.

Looks like you have a similar setup to me. Haven't got a problem with downloading WUs at all!

I've got 4 GPUs (1 running), 3 yoyo's (2 running) and 20 Milkyways (2 running) on the Q6600. Is your 'Network usage' set OK? Mines at 'connect about every' 0.000 days and 'addition work buffer' at 0.2.

I see you're doing 4 other projects so it might be that they're hogging the resources.

Work fetch will be a function of boinc rather than the project application.
Which version of boinc are you using?
