GPU's getting cheaper?

Having problems installing that new stick of memory? Found some great software or having issues with something? Or maybe want to chat about your PlayStation, X-Box, Nintendo, Sega, even your old Spectrum 48k....! Or maybe something you want to sell or acquire (computing related of course!). Let us know here...

GPU's getting cheaper?

Post by UBT - Timbo »

Hi all,

It seems that with the Chinese Govt banning "mining" of crypto-currencies and NVidia releasing newer versions of their GTX30x0 GPU's that cannot mine crypto-currencies, that maybe demand (from people who want to "mine") for these products is falling off and prices are getting cheaper, according to this report.

With luck, some decent GPU's might be available at more cost effective price levels, which could help BOINC crunchers...though I hope that the "crippled" versions can still be used for BOINC...

Hi all

So, over a year on and NVidia seem to have made far too many GPUs (or put another way, haven't sold enough, at the high prices they were wanting) and now they are planning to drop their prices, to clear stock, in advance of the RTX4000 Series, due in a couple of months...

More info here:

Anyone tempted to buy an energy guzzling GPU.... !!

I'm watching, but it's not my priority at the moment, cash wise. Although in the winter I may be able to justify it as an extra heater!

I'll be building a Zen 4, RTX 4080 system after I get back to TX for the winter.
Finally got Starlink at my Colorado home this month but still waiting for Texas.

A 4080 should definitely keep your house warm

I don't need a lot of heat at my Texas winter home. I sold my entire GPU collection during the crypto boom. 60+ GPUs. Back then when I had about 30 GPUs running in the house my A/C was running all winter long.

Hi Carl

There does seem to have been quite an improvement in performance with AMD CPUs over the last year or two...and they do seem to be more reliable, easier to upgrade from and competitive, pricing wise.

At last !!

But is it any good (as a broadband service? - of course it'll be better than nothing at all...!!!)
