Having problems installing that new stick of memory? Found some great software or having issues with something? Or maybe want to chat about your PlayStation, X-Box, Nintendo, Sega, even your old Spectrum 48k....! Or maybe something you want to sell or acquire (computing related of course!). Let us know here...

The Mystery E5-2699CV4 Xeon

Post by chriscambridge »

So I came across something very strange and after searching Google I cannot find any reference or anything about it..

A Xeon E5-2699CV4

unlike the normal E5-2699V4

So what on earth does the C indicate?

From what I can see on the sellers specification, it seems to be exactly the same as the non-C version, but just cheaper, which make nooo sense.

And the Chinese seem to have a lot of them.

The S-Spec code seems to confuse matters even further; its definitely not a ES/QS as it starts with a S. And it looks like a newer version of the 99 (T comes after J) but if that were true then you would expect it to be more expensive, not cheaper.

E5-2696V4 (SR2JO)
E5-2699V4 (SR2JS)
E5-2699CV4 (SR2TF

[Please note the 96 is the OEM version of the retail 99]

Hi Chris,

The only thing I can find with a quick search is here - https://www.yoycart.com/Product/539989351093/ which lists them as official Intel "seconds" of the normal E5-2699V4.

I'm not sure what makes them "seconds" but for other products, it usually means some flaw in them ... :?

Personally, I'd avoid them but if you want to risk it and let us know what they're like ....

The seller said they are the same as the normal 99V4's except these were made for Sun microsystems. They are definity not the same; I'm not sure about them being via Sun Microsystems.

I don't think there are seconds (as they are listed as official 99's); the reason they are so much cheaper is because they only turbo to 2.4 GHz (1-22 cores) and hence no-one wants them.

However what I have learnt is they are a few different variants of the 99V4, all 22c/44t.

The 99 is the most powerful V4 Xeon available:

Variant (base freq - all cores freq) - TDP
  • E5-2696-V4 (2.2 GHz - 2.8 GHz) - 150w
  • E5-2699-V4 (2.2 GHz - 2.8 GHz) - 145w
  • E5-2696A-V4 (2.4 GHz - 3.6 GHz) - 145w
  • E5-2696C-V4 (2.2 GHz - 2.4 GHz) - 145w
  • E5-2699R-V4 (2.2 GHz - 3.6 GHz) - 145w
  • E5-2699P-V4 (3.0 GHz - 3.6 GHz) - 300w
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_I ... processor)

I am not going to be buying anymore tech for quite a while now; I just got 2x threadrippers and the dual V2 2690's.

Hmm.. or maybe not seeing as I just found this! This is probably the best GPU (server) rack I have ever seen and it pretty much replicates the £50K HPC GPU (server) racks by Supermicro and NVidia.

If only I could find someone to buy my 25U server rack, as I now want to upgrade to a 36U version!

Key points about this GPU server chassis:

2 compartments; front houses the PCIE risers and upto 8 GPUs. back compartment houses the CPU/PSU/etc.

It features the following fans setup:
  • 4 large front fans pulling GPUs hot air out
  • 4 centre fans pushing air forward into the GPUs
  • 4 back fans pulling CPU(s) hot air out.

Hi Chris,

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that three fans front and back and five in the middle?

I'm also a little confused about airflow. If the fans at the front are blowing air out and the fans at the back are blowing air out, where is it coming in?!

I've always though the the airflow should be linear through the rack. either front to back or back to front. I think back to front would be better with this set up as the CPU won't heat the air up much before it gets to the GPUs.

Very nice setup though. I assume that's a standard PSU as eight modern GPUs will need more than 1600 W :D

You are right x3; I think I was looking at a different model when I wrote the fan count.

It comes with no fans, so you could put them on which direction you wanted, but I think your logic is sound.

Yeah I lot more I think unless you are running 1050s or something.
