Problems! BOINC and/or CUDA GPU, after Windows update

I don't know if anyone else is having issues after the latest big update from Microsoft.

It seems to be creating issues on new install's, be Windows or BOINC, across Hosts.

It has caused issues with Auth on BOINC manager:
When you click: add project or add project manager, it says:
The password you have entered is incorrect, please try again.
The message box window is called: BOINC Manager - Connection Error.
This is happening BEFORE you even get a chance to enter anything.
BOINC manager installed was the latest version from this website.
Solution given by BOINC support did not fix the issue:
Navigate to the BOINC data directory, default at c:\programdata\boinc, and remove gui_rpc_auth.cfg, then exit and restart BOINC
GRCPool admin has had the same issues, as well as others on BOINC forum:
I have had similar sounding problems on windows regarding the boinc auth. Linux works much better.
And now the stupid Windows update has caused problems with with NVidia drivers installs. Before the update 3x 1080 Ti working fine. After the update 1 of 3 has no CUDA support and hence cannot be used.

Tried everything (but below) and just going round in circles!

Mark, didn't you have an issue with one of your GPUs having CUDA missing? If so how did you fix it..?

I read that perhaps using DDU after booting into safe mode and removing all GPU drivers may fix it.. I had never come across DDU before but many people are saying it resolved their issues..

Hi Chris,

I don't have Windows automatic updates running so I haven't seen that problem.

As far as the non Cuda GPUs was concerned, rolling back to an earlier driver fixed the problem. I used version 378.49 and it hasn't given me any problems so I stick to that.

Okay no worries.

So it turned out to be the creator's fall update; I managed to restore back and now it works.

However still no word from BOINC support..

Can I ask how have you turned off updates Mark? I setup an option in config.msc (I think its called that) so it downloads but then should ask me when to install..

However I thought this update was mandatory after a certain while? I guess it could be because you are on Windows 7 (if I remember rightly) and I am on Windows 10.

2 days wasted; Bill gates you owe $100 which I have lost from Crypto mining..

hahaha no more updates!
Windows 7, there's a nice handy check box that says "Disable updates" Windows moans about setting it but will accept it :D

I'm not too sure the disabled services method still works as the last two comments on your link say
I've had my services related to updates disabled for a year now. Yesterday updates started downloading regardless. Looks like MS has found a way to force these into your machine even if you've done the above.

Well it turned out, in less than a minute after entering Windows from the first reboot after restoring back to the previous version of Windows, it started with the download. Actually while I was changing the setting.. And as soon as Windows starts the download, no matter what you do, your getting forced to do the update. (creator's fall)

So I did the restore again, except this time I knocked the internet out as soon as it restarted. Turned off automatic updates and so far no update.. It's been about 12 hours now so I am confident that has stopped it, at least for now.

Fingers crossed Chris.

Could you find the IP address from where Windows gets the updates and block it in your router?

It's probably based on dns rather than a static IP, and a dynamic dns at that.

eg something like:

updates3535.windows.microsoft.com

and dynamic so they can switch ips whenever for load balancing and/or DOS attacks..

I did think of the opposite; white list the crypto mining address as at this time no other address are/should be connected with.

For now I will see if Windows plays nice. If not then another way is to fool it you are on 'metered internet' as then it would not do the big update downloads.

So that did not work in the end!

I Stopped Windows update, Windows update assistant, as well as the scheduled tasks. But in every case Windows still got through with the update after a few days.

The mobo is now being returned as none of the others have this issue. I am sticking with the MSI Z97 Gaming 5 as that has the same number of PCIE slots but actually works and is much easier to setup.

Medium to long term it is all about the EPYC GPU rack (4 GPUs @ x16 Gen3 and 3 GPUs @ x8 Gen3; so it can run BOINC, F@H, and do cryptomining without any decrease in results due to slot size or generation).

Sounds like you're soon to be 'honoured' with the Spectre slowdown as well then if you can't avoid updates :(

Seems odd that the motherboard would stop the card from working, especially as it's specifically designed for GPUs?

I agree, for some reason the Windows update is making CUDA think there are insufficient PCEI lanes from the mobo.

I guess ASRock blame Microsoft, Microsoft blames CUDA, and CUDA blame ASRock - which is excellent news for the user.

I think perhaps all OS are going to try and force these Meltdown and Spectre updates on everyone.

They have already started as now the latest NVidia driver has had a patch included in it, not for its card but for the CPU.
Nvidia has released a statement to address that the new patch is only meant to mitigate the CPU security issue rather than patch an non-existent security flaw in the company's graphics cards. A Nvidia spokesperson informed us that its "GPU hardware is immune to the reported security issue."
It does not mention if it only patches CPUs actually affected, or all CPUs?

Looking at this, it would seem our V1, V3, and V4 Xeons are not actually effected by these bugs:

https://www.techarp.com/guides/complete ... e/2/#intel

Which is good news as they are the ones that actually do CPU processing and hence would be affected most by any slow downs.

In terms of my i7's they are affected, however their speed is fairly irrelevant is they are only used in the GPU Rack.

https://www.techarp.com/guides/complete ... spectre/3/

Hopefully the patch put out by Microsoft will actually only patch those OS running on CPUs that are actually affected by these bugs. That would be a better way to mitigate the slow down's expected across the tech industry due to the updates.

It's always easier to blame someone else ...

Automatic updates are all turned off and I don't plan on manually updating anything yet, it all works fine and all but one PC only connects to Boinc projects so doubtful there'll be any malicious code from them and there's no personal information on those PCs even if they are hacked.

The one PC that does have general internet access has virus protection and is additionally scanned once a week for any malicious files.

Maybe I should start using one of those as my main PC as all of my i7s are on that list? :D

You expect Microsoft to do something sensible?!

Probably not! :(
