GTX 1080 Benchmark for UBT

GTX1080 GPU Benchmark

Seeing as GTX 1080 GPUs have come down in price somewhat, how about we collate a benchmark on Core Clock speed for each graphics card?

The reason I think this is useful is the actual core/boast clock speed given does not actually add up to what you get. You can see the given speeds from this article, which is where I stole the list of GPUs from! :?

How to find your GPU Clock Speed

Each core clock speed must be got from GPU-Z (free GPU software), and have no (manual) over clocking; Basically the speed you get when you install the card and run GPU-Z. Feel free to average to the nearest 10 Mhz (eg 1949 becomes 1950 Mhz)

To keep things simple please run Collatz Conjecture BOINC project when benchmarking your GPU.

Please also state if you have got this speed from more than one card.

Just post your GPU makes and Clock scores in a post below and I will update the master list. :geek:

Your thoughts and opinions on this idea would be good too.

I am going to probably buy some 1080's shortly so I will try and buy a few different ones to add new benchmark's to the list.

Hi

The problem with GPUZ in my PC is that it causes it to Crash/freeze - well the last version did anyway. Not tried the new one for the stated reason! This was why I couldn't do the Collatz sprint, I had GPUz running and I blamed Collatz, it was only after a couple of weeks later I realised.

Hi Mikee,

I would try the latest version as they normally release new version every month or so to fix bugs.

The only time I have ever had problems with GPU-Z is when windows is having issues recognizing the GPUs; normally a few reboots sorts it.

If you can see the GPU in Windows device manager, as well as in NVidia Geoforce experience, normally I have found GPU-Z works okay.

I'm not too sure how accurate all this is going to be.

I have two identical Gigabyte GTX 1080 G1 Gaming cards. According to GPU-z (an old version - 1.17), one is running at 1809MHz and the other at 1860MHz. The Gigabyte spec is 1860MHz.

Both are currently running Collatz.

The only difference is that the slower GPU is running in a PCIe 3.0 x 16 slot while the faster one is in a PCIe 3.0 x 4 slot! Maybe if I tried a x1 slot it would go even quicker :D

The only other tested card on the list runs at 1847MHz maximum according to the MSI specification, not 1950MHz?! :?

Is that on the first tab, or second tab of GPU-Z?

Can you try and install the latest version?

Both my Gaming X GPUs show the 'official clock speed' on the first tab, but then the speed noted above on the 2nd tab.

Interesting, on the first tab, it says they are running at PCIE 2.0; I am running one in a slot, and one in a x1 to x16 riser. I had thought both were running Gen3, as they are i7's with only a single card being used. Although I would have to double check in the BIOS which is hassle as I never turn them off.

Also, something which could be having an effect, was explained when I asked about the diff between the Gaming X vs Z on Reddit:

"Stock clocks don't matter much because GPU Boost 3.0 will automatically boost as high as it can based on temp and power targets."

Part of this 'research' is just to see if any of this makes sense, or not! :?

Although saying above, I thought that the actual speed you get per card is a bit of a lottery based on the batch produced, some are better than others - which could make sense why one is running faster than the other?

For now I could list each card tested on its own line, and perhaps just remove any cards without tests, to make it clearer?!

Hi Chris,

That's on the second tab, the first tab states GPU clock of 1696, Boost of 1835 for the two cards.

I've tried GPU-z 2.40 and it gives identical results.

On the first tab it says the slower card is running at "PCIe x 16 3.0 @ x16 3.0" and the faster card at "PCIe x 16 3.0 @ x4 3.0"

The PCIe slot info is a red herring. Both have a reading in the "PerfCap reason" (performance cap), the faster card's is "Pwr" (99.7%) and the slower card is "Therm" (82 degrees) so I assume the faster card is limited by it's power setting and the slower card by it's temperature.

When I put the temperature limit of the slower card up to 87 degrees with MSI afterburner then the clock increases to 1860MHz.

Nope, all the cards WILL achieve the quoted specification under the specified operating conditions, most will also exceed it by varying amounts if the operating conditions are changed. If your GPUs are exceeding the manufacturers quoted specification by that much then there's some serious overclocking going on!

My 'slower' card will meet the quoted 1860MHz if it's cooled more, it'll also exceed it if cooled enough and other limits are changed.

Looks like you need more specific testing conditions.

no over clocking software; one is running on the Gaming 3 mobo which I could modify I guess, the other is running on a crappy iTX? (very small mobo) which is rubbish and therefore def does not having any O/C?

I guess maybe its best to just aim for the highest core/boast clock as defined in card specs as given.

Hi Chris,

It seems to depend a lot on the motherboard.

I've just tested my GTX1080s along with the one that you're getting and they all give very similar results but none of them match the earlier ones.

All tested under identical conditions, I had one of my dual E5-2670 motherboards out so they all went in the same slot one after another. The CPUs were running 16 Sztaki and 15 Gerasim tasks and the GPU was set to run Collatz with the .config tweaks to get the maximum performance from them. All completed the Collatz task in 373 - 376 seconds with almost identical credits per seconds values.

As can be seen,they' all run at the same clock speed to within 1% and all at the same temperature to within a couple of degrees.

The MSI card is limited by "voltage reliability" - maximum comfortable operating voltage reached, and the Gigabyte cards by the power limit.

I don't think either card has an inherent advantage over the other, each has it's own advantages and disadvantages. The MSI card is physically bigger but that allows for bigger fans that run slower (although none of the cards were audible when running) The Gigabyte card only needs one 8 way power connector so less connections/cables are required for multiple GPU set ups although that does mean it has less headroom for overclocking should you be that way inclined.

Personally, I'd go with whatever is cheapest at the time and that fits in with the appearance that you're looking for. Performance isn't going to be drastically different.

I agree, basically as long as the 1080 are not founder's edition, they all seem to run at around 1900 MHz give or take.

All my cards were ran and tested on same hardware/software.

The advertised specification for core/boast clock speed seems to have little to do with what it actually achieves out of the box with no O/C.

Gaming X advertised specification boast core speed is 1822/1847 MHz, yet in 2 out of our 3 cards is 1950 MHz.

Also, they does seem to be a lottery in terms of specifically what speed you will get, even within the same brands of Cards.

Like you say though, it does seem that the cheapest one seems to be the best option; what I would say though is that the Gaming X, Gaming X+, and G1 cards are some of the better ones, given the point noted above, and hence what would be useful is a 'less powerful' 1080 just to confirm that this also runs around the 1900 MHz range.
