NTL (of course now Virgin Media) deliver the goods. To be honest I have been with them over 6 years now with next to no issues at all, infact I have had interrupted service maybe four times in total.

Ye gods... that's really bad....and I thought I had a lousy connection....!

Where are you in UK and can you get a LLU provider?

Use the samknows website to find out your exchange and find out if a different provider serves it...

Even though Dublin is closer for me, the London one is faster.

I didn't know that Tiscali have their own LLU ADSL service - thought they were still selling the BT Wholesale service....

As for Bulldog - I looked at their site and in the small print it says:
Connection charge is £30 if transferring from an active BT phone line. Customers who do not have an active BT line will require a new line connection - the charge for this is £99.

So, maybe it'll only cost you £30 for the connection.

Thinking of upping my speed soon, going to wait until my next bill comes as I can't workout the full cost for all my services as I have had various credits and debits in the last few months that are not part of my normal service.

Also sent an email to Virgin Media asking them nicely to attempt to increase the upload speeds as I see no reason they should be so low nowadays

WOW that is a surprise, I only get 3280 down and 340up if I use the Washington server?
Yes Timbo, our exchange is about 0.5 of a mile away so not quite at the end of the drive but not far off!

My new connection is a lot faster than the old Tiscali 1mb that I had. I'm about 1.25km from the exchange (straight line).

Terry, that is exactly the speed I had for months with BT.  It's due to them getting the initial line speed test wrong in the first 10 day. They're too stupid to work it out, I had a 'max threshold rate' of 504Kbps. No one ever thought this might be the problem, I just heard the person mumbling it to themselves and jumped on it asking them to re test it.

You're right, £99 was for a new line installation.

After a bit of research, Cable & Wireless sold Bulldog to Pipex in sept 06 since then 20% of the subscribers have left which uses the Tiscali network, and their reputation isn't very good, BT is looking favourite at the moment.

Free evening and weekend calls and up to 8 on the broadband, bundle 2 I think it was (started at a lower price then sneaked up while I wasn't looking).  Never had a problem with Virgin.net since I started with their dial up about 10 years ago but it is a luxury as sky is free for 2GB or £5 for a 40GB usage allowance so I will save £120 or £180/year which will help with the leccy bills

Even though my speed test says 'Telewest', it's all Virgin Media now. I pay for the 'M' broadband, which is £18/mnth for 'unlimited' 2Gb, which I usually get, except teatime and breakfast of course!

I'd be interested in the Sky broadband as I've been a Sky customer since analogue (pre-card!) But I don't have a BT line into the house, so I'd have to include the reconnect cost and the line rental also.

I am not sure it is worth switching if you have got to add BT line rental (about £12 a month?) most of the saving would be gone and if there is a BT reconnection charge it would take a while just to break even.  One drawback with the Sky sagem wireless router is only 2 ethernet sockets, I could connect 5 PCs to the virgin speedtouch box although on the plus side the Sky wireless signal seems better.  Depending on your Sky package it might be cheaper to get everything from Virgin.

Our phone bill is ~£38/mnth, this includes the £18 broadband charge. The other £20 is for unlimited calls (not mobile or premium) all week and w/end.

But then our TV is £58/mnth, this is Sky+ and Multiroom (full Sky package in both rooms)

So you can call our monthly TV, phone and 'tinternet bill £96/mnth

Ouch!!  Mine should now be about £27 to include broadband, Sky minimum tv package (approx 200 channels*), free evening & weekend calls and BT line rental. No multi room, HD or daytime calls in the week  :(

This is the highest I have had so far with my ISP, it generally floats any where around 13,000 & 20,000 kb/s. This is based on my wireless connnection.

Waiting for the 50Mb Broadband to come out, will see how much it is, probaly mega expensive to start with

We've had a Demon ADSL line since it became available at our house, some 9-10 years I think.  It's been reasonably reliable but it has never managed to impress anyone with its speed.
This is the sort of speed we got

Was looking around the Virgin site and found you can have a free Super hub and double speed
Was on 16/20meg ;-)
The engineer also told me the area speed (Nuneaton) will be doubled in July ... yay!

Hi all,

Mine is now:

Ping: 95 msec
Download: 16.68 Mbps
Upload: 0.93 Mbps

I'm only standard Plusnet broadband - I can get fibre, but I can wait until the price comes down - and I'm about 200 yds from the exchange.

Soon be changing to BT though - a nice deal on offer at the moment, plus I'll then get BT Sport and free wifi.

Roll on 24th November !!

Maybe I should have stopped BU while I did it?

Also standard Plusnet but I get it much cheaper than others as I've been on a 'special offer' for a couple of years. They keep trying to get me to upgrade but I'm not falling for that :D

Wow this is an old thread - some memorable names here - wonder where they've all gone!

From 2007...

Not as big a difference in 7 years as I would have thought though still using copper wires here so to be expected I suppose!

Rural now, couple of miles from the exchange don't think it's copper,  probably tin cans and string.

Soon be changing to BT though - a nice deal on offer at the moment, plus I'll then get BT Sport and free wifi.

Roll on 24th November !!

regards
Tim
Hi all,

It's the 24th Nov and I'm just waiting for my BT broadband to start up.

Hopefully, when it's working I can put my home farm back to work...it's off at the moment, as I don't know when the broadband will be back on.

regards
Tim
