OK, I'm not getting up for the start of THAT one!

I'd rule out BURP, Citizen Science, DENIS, FIND, PRIMABOINCA, dDM and Wanless for assorted reasons so I'm guessing, either Cosmology, Enigma or SRBase (Don't know anything about Universe and VGTU seems pretty quiet these days)

Maybe by then I'll have finished getting validated work from the past three sprints!

Hi

Just a few hours to go and for a change I DON'T want it to be Primaboinca! We're just 2-3 days from the next 2 points and I reckon a sprint now would send things pear shaped. Not really sure what project I want now

Hi Mike

If it's not PrimaBOINCA, then it really doesn't matter which other one it is...just have to download some tasks and see how they run.

And if we can get a bit of a head start on it, all the better ;-)

regards
Tim

PS: With the sudden availability of BURP tasks, I'd have an outside bet on that project ;-)

Hi all

And the chosen project is: Universe@home

Note: The project uses a NEW URL, so detach and then re-attach to the project using this NEW project URL:

https://universeathome.pl/universe/

This is a CPU-based project with average length tasks (3-4 hours, but can be longer) and long-ish deadlines (14 days).

So, time to suspend everything else, download some tasks and off we jolly well go !!

Tim

This one is going to be a challenge. 3D Now and Poland are No. 2 and 3 in the world respectively. 3D Now's RAC is more than 1.2 million more than ours! I suppose that will make it all the more pleasing if we can stiff them on this one :-)

Hi

Jeez - you two are keen!

Having a bit of difficulty accessing FB at the mo...

You forgot to mention a quorum of 2, so there's going to be a delay waiting for the wingman. As WUs are over 3 hours there will be a wait for validation, maybe a few days! Tony Maughan has been waiting since 30 Oct for 1.

The best way to deal with the quorum issue is to set your cache large to download enough work for the entire sprint. Then the WUs that you crunch at the end will already have been out for 3-4 days which improves the chances of your wingman having finished it already.

Well I thought about staying up until the sprint was announced but decided against it, seems there's more dedicated team members

Universe eh? Not a project I've crunched before and I don't plan on starting any new projects at the moment so not for me I'm afraid. I shall content myself with cheering from the sidelines, good luck :handgestures-thumbupleft:

(Can't access Formula Boinc either, well done on crashing the site so no-one else knows what the sprint project is :D)

HI Mark

My excuse is that I was working 'til late - so I thought I'd just keep an eye on FB and see what's what.

Of course, you could always keep an eye on the CPU projects that 3D Now and Poland have been crunching and hence if they both swap resources over to Universe, then UBT could make up some ground on both these teams on some other projects?

Hi all

Looks like one of my PC's just gives "Computation errors" on Universe tasks... :-(

https://universeathome.pl/universe/forum_thread.php?id=292&postid=2470#2470

So, I'll have to crunch some other CPU tasks, such as Leiden, Gerasim and SRBase on this PC :-)

I get the 'Computation error' on my lappy as well so that's staying on Gerasim for now.

Hi Tim,

Are you suggesting that I'm not doing enough monitoring of our opponents?!

There's only really PRIMABOINCA and Sztaki where we can take points off Poland and those are already in hand. BURP and Gerasim need to be defended from Poland but again, it's being taken care of. 3DNow! need watching on Leiden but we should stay in front until the end with no extra effort.

So overall, pretty quiet and we can do our own thing quietly mopping up a point here and a couple there.

Hi Mark

Perish the thought !!

I was merely "postulating" in the hope that maybe, if other members aren't interested in Universe@home as a "Sprint project" then maybe they too would like to consider helping out on other worthy projects...as per your suggestions perhaps ??

I'll do my bit on Gerasim and Leiden, for the one PC that cannot do any Universe tasks - with SRBase as the "back-up" project if other projects run dry. Still doing my bit on Moo! for now.

And if we can pick up the odd point or two on this weekends Sprint, then it all helps.

We have an absolute mountain to climb to get into the points on this sprint. Catching 3D Now or Poland really does seem beyond us. This could be a damage limitation exercise. I've currently got 10 completed tasks; any idea how much they score? I've never done Universe before.

Hi Chris

My Xeon PC got a few tasks which completed as a "test" - the tasks downloaded were the BHspin v2 ones, so the credits might vary for other apps.

Three tasks took 9,700 or so seconds (2 3/4 hrs) and earned 666.67 credits
The other 11 tasks took approx 24,000 seconds (6 2/3rd hrs) and got the same 666.67 credits

If you take a look here, you can see what other team members are currently achieving:

https://universeathome.pl/universe/team_members.php?teamid=20&offset=0&sort_by=expavg_credit

(I did take a quick peek and most are getting the same credit score, but the time to crunch varies from around 5,000 up to 30,000 seconds - about 1½ to over 8 hours, depending on CPU capability).

So, you pays your money (on project preferences) and see what you get. !!

regards
Tim

PS Universe@home is paying Ethereum coins for any credits earned...so if you haven't got a (free) account, take a look at this thread:

Hi

I've not disabled network access for the Universe sprint but I did download 1 days worth. However, they're not uploading...

Anyone who hasn't disabled access getting the same?

Hi

Well that's weird! On the manager it showed that nothing was getting uploaded so I aborted all the WUs that were waiting to be uploaded. The manager then showed 'ready to report'. I reported them and looked at the site and they're showing as 'Validation pending' or 'valid'

Hi Mike

In a way, if you didn't upload any work, then that's a good thing, as the Sprint didn't start until 2am THIS morning...so uploading them last night so any completed tasks might not have counted :-(

(I am assuming that you are not the wingman for someone elses earlier returned WU - so it could be they might count if your task was the 1st of the quorum ;-) )

I just allowed network access and uploaded some tasks and no issues at 7am :-)

Sounds like Boinc Manager got a little confused Mike. Good job they were uploaded successfully anyway.
