Formula-BOINC Sprint #5 11-14th May 2017

Postby UBT - Timbo » Thu May 04, 2017 9:28 pm

Hi all

The next Formula-BOINC sprint starts at 22:00 UTC (11pm BST) on Thursday 11th May and ends at 21:59 UTC (10:59pm BST) on Sunday 14th May 2017.

The project for this Sprint will be announced on Wednesday 10th May sometime late in the evening.

*IF* (as per last time) the selected project is one where we cannot reasonably earn any FB points, (simply due to lack of combined crunching power), then another project may be chosen by UBT. So, keep an eye on this message thread to see which project the Team chooses (if it is different to the FB chosen project).

So, if you want to be joining in, start by running down any current work, maybe just pick one CPU and one GPU projects tasks, limit your cache to maybe 0.25 days and be ready to switch to the announced project on Wednesday night.

If you are going to be "doing your bit", once you have increased your cache back to normal, set any irrelevant projects to "no new tasks" and download plenty of work from the selected project - just use BOINC Manager to switch off "network access" and upload any completed tasks sometime after 11pm on the 11th.

Then keep crunching until Sunday night.

regards
Tim

Hopefully this sprint will be one in which we can compete, we could do with the extra points.

Hi all

And so, for the 5th FB Sprint the project chosen is Moo! Wrapper :-)

So, time to start making like a cow ;-) and get some GPU's glowing :-)

Somehow, I don't think we'll do so well on this Sprint...

Oh ye of little faith, we're currently only being beaten by Gridcoin in daily RAC so we should put up a fair showing. Admittedly, some teams will be crunching Collatz and switch over but we should still do well, it might put a bit of dent in our charge up the table though. Time to switch my GPUs onto Moo ... oh wait :D

Hi Mike,

Not quite, my cows are quite happily munching away they've just had their access to the internet removed so that they can save any output for tomorrow evening when it will count towards the sprint :D There's still a couple of hosts without GPU projects that should be reporting work.

There's a CPU version?

HI Mark

Indeed there is:

http://moowrap.net/apps.php

It doesn't "pay" as well as the GPU version, but if one is not worried about other CPU projects, you can change your project preferences and crunch both types :-)

Tim

PS: I woke up this morning and discovered that, I too, had also accidentally switched off my Internet router last night... tut tut...my daily RAC is going to reduce for a while :-( Oh well, can't be helped....!!

I think some of my CPU projects could stand a three day rest :)

That's terrible, I hope you can get it sorted out in about twelve hours :D

Hi Mark

Indeed it is a shame as the router is in a different location so I can't get to it until perhaps about 11pm tonight...

I just hope I didn't switch anything else off that was important ;-)

That's a coincidence Craig, mine began working again at 23:32 ... still catching up at the moment, thank goodness it's unlimited!

All these router problems are going to put a bit of a spike in the graphs :D

Hi

Never any chance of it lasting. However, we seem to be holding our own with 2nd place. We certainly are on target for a top 3 finish.

2    UK BOINC Team           18    4,897,416

Hi all

Well, you could knock me down with a kipper... ;-)

Never thought we could make such a good showing on this Sprint. !!

With luck, we could make a good fist of this and do quite nicely....so keep on crunching and let's see where we are on Sunday night !!

Well done everyone, so far, so good !!

Hi Mike,

Oh no, it was never going to last when Gridcoin normally put out 17 million a day compared to our 3.6 million.

Top three looks fairly certain although L'Alliance Francophone are catching us at about 100k an hour so second place might not last long.

It will, however, mean we leapfrog USA into eighth place so long as they don't get sixth place or better (currently in 11th)

Hi Tim,

Before the sprint, we were second in the world at RAC so we were always going to do well.

The downside was that we were already flat out on it whereas other teams could potentially ramp up their output.

Hi Mark

Yup - that was my "assessment" of the likely outcome, before the sprint started. Hence my slightly pessimistic tone.

OTOH, one never knows, until it's over, as to what the other teams "focus" is...some will switch to a project where they can make a difference (as we did last time) while others will join in.

But even 3rd place on Sunday night would be brilliant !

Hi Tim,

It appears that other than ourselves and L'Alliance Francophone, no-one else has made much of a change to their output so top three is pretty much guaranteed. At their current rate, none of the teams in fourth place or below will even reach 1.5 million.

The good news is that L'Alliance Francophone seem to have eased off and are now only catching us at 15K an hour, this could be a close one :D

[edit]
Looks like about a 42 hour lead at this point!

Hi all,

At 48 hours to go we had a lead of 928K, with 36 hours to go we have a lead of 1083K.

Not wanting to count chickens but it's looking promising for second place :)
