Formula BOINC 2017

Postby UBT - Timbo » Thu Dec 01, 2016 8:33 pm

Hi all

The FB league for 2016 is now over and we came 7th (in League Two, out of 66 teams).

But our latest RAC was over 10 million, so we'll (probably) be promoted to League One in 2017.

How's about we start planning now as to how we can overtake everybody else?

regards
Tim

Hi Nick

I'm surprised no-one seems to have done much with the Formula BOINC website, though that might be mis-leading if they are working on it and haven't updated it yet...though the 2016 badges don't appear on their website....

As far as 2017 goes, FB take a snapshot of the credits per team as of 1st Jan and then they start counting how many credits have been added after that to start compiling the 2017 league tables.

So, it might be a good idea to suspend the DNA task for now, as long as the deadline isn't missed and is sufficiently far away that you can still complete it before the deadline passes, sometime in early January.

As we approach the end of December, it might be a good idea if anyone has any WU's with long deadlines, to "micro-manage" them, by crunching them up to say 95% for now and then suspending them....and unsuspend them come 1st Jan ! But there's some issues:

1) You really need to set a very large cache to grab as many WU's as possible because in most cases, once you suspend a task, the project won't send you any more. With some projects, there is also a limit on how many tasks you can have in your cache at any one time.

2) As mentioned, you do need to make sure that the deadline won't pass before you can finish off each WU.

3) You need to ensure that the tasks do support being suspended - Goofy, for instance, doesn't and will restart from the beginning !!

Of course, one can do this with a number of projects in order to build up a cache of credits that can all be "earned" at the beginning of January. ;-)

Tim

Hi all

Anyone else want to add here how long the deadlines are for some projects - the products I'm crunching right now are as follows:

CAS@home (CPU) - 36 hours
Fight Neglected Diseases (CPU) - 2 days
SRBase (CPU) - 2 days
yafu (CPU) - 2 days

Leiden (CPU) - 4 days
NFS (CPU) - 4 days
TN-Grid (CPU) - 4 days

Goofy (NCI) - 5 days - but cannot be suspended
Rosetta (CPU) - 5 days

Moo! Wrapper (GPU) - 7 days
NumberFields (CPU) - 7 days
pogs (CPU) - 7 days
PrimaBOINCA (CPU) - 7 days
SztaKI (CPU) - 7 days
WUProp (NCI) - 7 days

(As of 21st December, the following projects are worth "suspending" if you can crunch (say) 90%+ of each task before the end of this year - then unsuspend them, after 1st Jan, next year):

Enigma (CPU) - 10 days
Yoyo@home (CPU) - 10 days
Asteroids (GPU) - 10½ days

MilkyWay (GPU) - 12 days

Atlas (CPU + VBox) - 14 days
Collatz (GPU) - 14 days
Einstein (GPU) - 14 days
Universe (CPU) - 14 days

Cosmology (CPU) - 15 days

PrimeGrid (CPU/GPU) - 4 to 45 days (task dependant)
SETI@home (CPU) - 21 to 55 days (task dependant)

DistributedDataMining (CPU) - 21 days
SETI@home (GPU) - 55 days
RNA@home (CPU+VBox) - 6 months !!

regards
Tim

the dead line passed in September but i think that was to start it as the deadline was never long enough to finish the task.

Hi Nick

I checked the DNA@home website and it shows that there are no tasks in progress:

http://csgrid.org/csg/server_status.php

So, it could be that your WU has been cancelled...might be an idea to check your "tasks" list on their website and see if it is still "in progress".

Hi Nick

That's a RNA task, not a DNA one ;-)

And sadly, out of 68 downloads to PC's of Workunit 6330852 only one other WU has been successful thus far (and it took the members PC 12,986,951.53 seconds - about 150 days - to complete it). So hopefully yours will be completed too.

And if it is, then you should get some credits as the quorum is 2...

Hi Nick,

How accurate has the time for the workunit been? I have two RNA tasks at the moment and ones been slowly counting down from 10 days remaining at the rate of about 3 hours a day! I believe the workunits automatically extend their deadlines so long as no one else has completed it. You'll still get some points if you abandon it.

Check on the workunit page on your account for the history of it and you'll see if anyone else has started it. So long as you finish it before anyone else it'll count.

Regards,

Mark

Hi Tim,

I have a RNA workunit downloaded on 3rd November 2016 and the deadline is 2nd May 2017!

Someone did spend 5,820,051.78 seconds on it (two and a bit months) before abandoning it and they got 17,460.16 credits for it. Seeing our TOTAL for RNA this year was only 10,730 credits, I'm going to stick with it :D

Ah, one of the shorter ones :) I've got one on 1232 hours done and 3527 hours still to go ... and it was originally scheduled to finish in October!

Hi all

I've grabbed a few WUs from various projects where the deadline is sometime in early 2017.

If I've planned it right, I might not earn many credits between now and New Years Eve, but come 1st jan, I might just have a load, assuming they all crunch OK.

Anyone else doing anything to help get us off to a good start in Formula-BOINC 2017 ?

Hi

Not done anything about it yet.

Just had a look at the site - nothing has been posted on the forum since July 2015. Is there going to be a FB 2017? I'm assuming the main site has been configured to run autonomously and will auto generate a new sub page for 2017, however, will the projects remain the same? Are new ones going to be started? Suppose I should ask over there but as nothing has been written for 18 months I don't suppose I'd get an answer!

Hi Mikee

I registered on their forum a little while ago and posed a question or two, via a PM to sebastien - I've not heard back, and the msg is still in my "outbox", over there...so it's not been seen yet.

I doubt it is auto-filled...more likely someone will re-generate the 2016 scripts and then re-edit the site to show the new sections for 2017.

I would hope this is done before 1st jan, but I don't recall what happened earlier this year when the 2016 section "went live".

So, I guess we just have to wait.

Maybe we can get a few UBT members to sign up on their forum...at least we can have a chat over there about FB 2017 !! It might encourage a few others (from other teams) to comment ?

Not done anything for next year yet other than the normal clean out of dust and tidying up of cables in preparation.

Got some workunits downloaded and crunching but the latest due date is December 28th so they won't be contributing to FB2017. I do have a couple of RNA tasks that are at 999/1301 hours and show no signs of finishing yet so they might make it to next year (RNA deadlines get automatically extended)

Didn't realise that the Collatz WUs had such a long deadline, I may stockpile a few of them as they only take seconds each

I'll have a quick look at the Formula Boinc forum tonight.

Mark

Thanks for the info :-)

I've joined Collatz and downloaded a WU - should take 4 days it reckons so I'll see how long it actually takes then download a few more and try a bit of jiggery-pokery so they upload next year.

Hi Francis,

When ran on a GPU, the tasks take from 1 minute to quarter of an hour. Unless you're really keen to crunch Collatz workunits, I'm not sure that's a good use of your time.

Hi Francis

As Mark says, I think you might find that running CPU tasks on Collatz is going to be quite laborious - as each task is going to take maybe 80,000+ seconds (nearly a day) depending on your CPU - when a GPU might only take 3,000 to 5,000 seconds (depending on the GPU). Plus you'll get about 4,000 credits...which might be OK, all things considered.

Tim
