Re: Award from WCG

Hi Jeff, Excellent work - well done. I think WCG is probably one of the better projects with real world objectives, even if it is really using volunteer computing for commercial gain. If somehow a breakthrough can be made with regards to Cancer cure and/or prevention, then this could be life changin...

Re: UBT #1 in the UK

Hi all

Just bumping this back up, as I missed this particular anniversary of this MILESTONE a month or so ago. :-(

Basically 10 years ago, we became the #1 UK team...and we've held onto this ever since.

So, well done to everyone involved, past and present for making this happen !!

regards
Tim

New 'low requirements' Linux OS

Hi all If you have an older PC lying around and want to make use of it (maybe for some BOINC crunching) then this might suit: Elive Min. Requirements: 192 Mb RAM, 500 Mhz CPU, 32-bit, non-UEFI, sysinit, PAE (bigmem) kernel + 486 kernel A free download is available: https://www.elivecd.org/download/s...

Re: I've got a Billion!

I've had a look back through the Forum and it looks like my first post in this section was back in September 2007, when I'd reached the heady heights of 50k! How times change, eh? The points roll in a bit quicker than that these days.... Hi Jeff Indeed - with GPUs and faster, multi-core CPUs, credi...

Re: I've got a Billion!

Hi Jeff Excellent stuff...I recall getting quite excited at hitting one million in total BOINC credits...but over time, with improvements in CPU and GPU performance levels, one can get a bit blase about hitting such achievements - though getting to 1M on *each* project is still pretty tough going. B...

Re: Joke Thread

A joke from a friend of mine on Facebook: Waiting between Bishop Stortford and Harlow, to catch speeding drivers, a Police Officer sees a car puttering along at 11MPH. Says he to himself: "This driver is just as dangerous as a speeder!" So he turns on his lights and pulls the driver over. Approachin...

Hi Currently in Spain, lost case, stolen phone, stolen tablet but at least I got this target I was aiming for months ago! So not all bad! 😀 Mike HI Mike Sorry to hear that - hope it's all insured and you've had a chance to cancel anything important (like phone contract etc). I don't suppose you set ...

Re: Social thread

HI Penny Condolences on losing your father earlier in the year. It's a strange thing: We're told what to do by our parents for the 1st 15+ years, and we don;t have a choice. Then we have to go through the 'difficult teen years' and then we get married and have kids...so that takes up the next 15+ yr...

Re: Social thread

Hi Jeff Thanks for taking the plunge !! Mind you - I think you should get a better deal than half price beer... ;-) My philosophy these days is do what you can while you can you're a long time dead.... Since my diagnosis for cancer (about 9 years ago) I can totally agree with this...life really is t...

Social thread

Hi all This forum has been going for so long, and we've had a good number of postings submitted. But one thing we've never really done is to think about peoples welfare...both physically and mentally. When we're young, we don't think about the fragility of life nor the issues arising from an 'aging ...

Re: User of the day

Hi When fsnet was closed down a few years ago I had to change most of the project email addresses. Some I couldn't change as they had closed down and were unavailable any more. This meant that UOTD ceased picking up fsnet results and restarted with the gmail account, hence, I have 2 entries in the l...

Hi Mark But what about the "Professional" (ie NOT Gaming version) Turing Series, as per this: https://www.techradar.com/uk/news/nvidia-turing Prices have got me floored: Nvidia Turing price Thus far, Nvidia has shown that Turing’s incredible real-time ray tracing technology will come at a steep prem...

Pick a number - GTX1180 / GTX2080 / RTX2080

The Nvidia GTX 2050 / 2060 / 2070 / 2080 / Ti boards are announced today, maybe you should get one instead of spending your money on holidays ... :D Mark Hi Mark With luck, that'll mean that the prices of 10xx series GPUs might drop a bit...and likewise, older series GPUs might drop too... Sadly, i...

Re: WOW !!

Hi Jeff, Nice memories :- I, too, started originally on a ZX81, my cheap Vesta tape recorder and a 16kb "RAMPack" (which did indeed "wobble") and then my brother caught the bug and got a 48k ZX Spectrum; he got bored with playing "Manic Miner" after a while and gave it to me. I paired that up with a...

Another Intel CPU flaw

Hi all It seems that researchers/bug hunters have found another flaw in the design of certain Intel CPUs. https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/08/15/foreshadow_sgx_software_attestations_collateral_damage/ Thus far, it has been termed "Foreshadow" and relates to how SGX is implemented in the CPU, which...

WOW !!

Hi all It's been a while since I had a truly big "WOW" moment, but today is one of those days. But first some "back story" over the last 30 years !!. I bought my first PC back in 1988, which had a 12 MHz 80286 CPU, 1Mb of RAM, an orange monochrome monitor, a Hercules graphics card and a 5 1/4" high ...

Recent ECJ ruling on images

Hi all I've been made aware of the following with regards to the posting of images owned by third parties.: https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/08/08/europe_supreme_court_copyrighted_images/ Reading through this, I am worried that any images posted by any members here, might then result in proceeding...
