Re: CPUs on Collatz - DON'T try this at home !!

Wait until the new Nvidia Ampere GPUs come out! CPU crunching is on the way out. lol Hi Carl You're probably right...and, in real terms, it's about time...the huge processing power that GPUs have had over the last 2 or 3 generations have really proved that CPUs are only good "en masse" (ie if you h...

CPUs on Collatz - DON'T try this at home !!

Hi all I guess this falls into the category of "Congratulations, numb-nuts " !! I rather optimistically allowed one of my Xeon hosts to download some Collatz CPU tasks about 13 days ago, BEFORE the Rosetta sprint. And I left them crunching to see what benefit they might provide...either in terms of ...

Re: Problems running multiple Rosetta tasks

Hi Mark Thanks for your further input. I was also thinking of suggesting that he try another project, just as a test...and to choose one that was low on memory requirements. At least that will help to confirm, if it is a "hardware" issue (such as RAM), or a software/configuration type issue. regards...

Re: Problems running multiple Rosetta tasks

Hi Mark Some more info just received from Bill: The host in question has no purpose other than running BOINC and Rosetta. OS: Windows 10 Pro 10.0.18362 Build 18362 Mainboard: Supermicro X10DAi V1.02 CPU's: 2X Xeon E5-2697 v4 18 cores 36 logical processors each. Total 72. GPU: not assigned to run any...

23rd June 2004 > 2020: UBT birthday

Hi all It completely escaped me that 16 years and 1 week ago, UBT was formed. I'm not sure why I forgot...maybe the ol' brain cells are slowly dieing off? So, I thought I'd post this as a reminder so that in future years, it'll be easier to "find". Needless to say a lot has happened in the interim.....

Re: Problems running multiple Rosetta tasks

I only had the lack of disc space once, incorrectly I might add, so was not sure exactly when it got triggered. Oh he's talking about affinity via Windows/OS; I thought he meant via BM. Hmm not sure if he should start messing with that, seems like a great way to confuse BM even further. I guess the...

Re: Problems running multiple Rosetta tasks

Is this "Bill"? His 72 thread, dual E5 host has 64 gig of RAM and the task output states "Peak working set size 2,229.42 MB" for RAM usage." so that's a 2+ gig peak for each task and 'only' 64 gig available. HI Mark Yup - it is "Bill". I've already replied to him with a number of things to check, a...

Problems running multiple Rosetta tasks

Hi all A fellow UBT member on Rosetta (who isn't a forum member and contacted me via the Rosetta website) has got an issue with his hardware as follows: I have a Twin E5 CPU PC running Windows 10. This machine is fully committed to Rosetta. 36 Work units each are distributed to the two CPU's but one...

Space Guard Centre UK

Hi all Just seen a great news item about the Space Guard Centre, based in Knighton, Powys. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-53082475 This is a totally self-funded project, lead by Jonathan ("Jay") Tate who has recognised the importance of being able to recognise comets and asteroids that might be...

Formula BOINC Sprint #10

Hi all So, a few UBT members are about to start crunching some Rosetta tasks, as this was the project chosen for this 10th Sprint of 2020. Rosetta issues tasks that are processed by CPUs, so the more CPUs that are crunching Rosetta, the better it will be for the Team by the time the Sprint ends at 1...

Re: Another WCG Badge!

WELL DONE Jeff :-)

Always nice to see members gaining rewards for their crunching...

As for your office, I know the feeling...so, maybe just allow them to crunch when the office is NOT operational ?

Re: Gaia@home

I have the Discord app running all the time on my laptop. Just sits in the system tray. It makes a notification sound when people are posting. I just check to see if something interesting is being discussed. I'm currently subscribed to 10 different channels. Hi Carl Fair enough - I work from 2 diff...

Re: Gaia@home

You guys really need to get out more. It was mentioned in Discord. Never know what you might find there. Well, "getting out more" is a bit of an issue right now ;-) you know - Covid-19?, Pandemic?, just basic stuff... Seriously though, Discord has a lot going for it in many ways...but it's "user in...

Re: Gaia@home

Hi Carl Interesting :D and nice find :-) Looks like a really good "science-y" type project. ;-) Shame it only seems to support Linux applicationa at present...and it seems most teams so far have ZERO credits, so I wonder when they will actually start issuing tasks? If anyone wants to join this proje...

That link went to user Chus Carro. I have no credits but I don't think I ever got around to doing any tas...

Hi Carl

My account page is being shown correctly...so, maybe there's an issue with your account?

Might be worth sending the admin a message?

BOINC News - going back to the beginning

Hi all While I was having a trawl through looking for older (now deceased) projects, I came across this: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/old_news.php It's a listing of all the "news" from different projects going all the way back to 24th August 2002, when BOINC was being developed and was initially runni...

Probably should move these Gridcoin posts into an appropriate thread so I and others can find them when needed.
