Re: UBT UK #1 in LHC

HI Mark

Well spotted.

We've not been doing too well on UK #1 placings - so nice to be able to claw one back ;-)

But big thanks to all of our LHC contributors for their efforts :-)

regards

Re: New Project: BOINC@TACC

I've just upgraded my PC to Ryzen 5 processor running Windows 10 and decided to perform a clean install of BOINC. When re-adding my Projects, I came across a new project, BOINC@TACC and created an account, as I liked the sound of what they were aiming to achieve. There wasn't a UK BOINC TEAM that I...

Re: NumberFields now updated to v3 app

Hi Mark I can never understand the reasoning why some projects offer significantly fewer credits than others. Surely, as a project, you want as many successfully completed tasks to be returned and (one assumes) in as short a period of time as possible. That then gives the project real data to work o...

Re: NumberFields now updated to v3 app

Hi all I've now submitted just under 300 NumberFields tasks and can report as follows: 1) The earlier tasks (v2.xx) ran for around 4 hours (abt 240 mins) (in my case and depending on CPU speed) and earned approx 370 credits per completed task. That's about 1.5 credits per minute. 2) The new tasks (v...

NumberFields now updated to v3 app

Hi all It looks like NumberFields have developed a new version CPU app, (v3.0) that runs 10x faster. For now the fixed credits per task has been dispensed with and credit will be issued on a run time basis (for a while). More info here: https://numberfields.asu.edu/NumberFields/forum_thread.php?id=3...

Re: Full Immersive Cooling: the future, now..

Pfft, beginners, why bother with a few gallons of mineral oil when there's a whole ocean available - https://news.microsoft.com/features/under-the-sea-microsoft-tests-a-datacenter-thats-quick-to-deploy-could-provide-internet-connectivity-for-years/ Not quite the same though, more water cooling on a...

Re: Full Immersive Cooling: the future, now..

Hi Chris Interesting post - as I've just seen this post which is along similar lines. https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/03/29/asperitas_boston_supermicro_immersion_cooling/ In the latter, they mention that the hardware is immersed in a dielectric liquid....hopefully, they get motherboard and periph...

Re: GTX1160

Hi all

So, there's a GTX 11xx Series AND a GTX 16xx Series now ??

Jeez - it was bad enough with the GTX 5xx, 6xx, 7xx, and then 9xx Series, etc :-(

Re: BOINC Network preferences not working

Hi Mark OK - thanks for the info. I'll leave both PCs on "Suspend network" for now as I have quite a few completed tasks and if the chosen Sprint project is one of the ones I've been crunching for the last few days, then it'll give us a start... But I'm in Cambridge tomorrow when the Sprint starts a...

Re: BOINC Network preferences not working

Hi Tim, OK, done a bit of experimenting. Tick "Transfer files only between" and set to 00:01 and 00:00 (or any other combination where the second time is before the first) Set the individual days to the times you want - Tick Thursday and set the times to 13:01 and 23:59 Select Activity -> Network a...

Re: BOINC Network preferences not working

Hi Tim, Your first setting allows network access all the time! Heading home now, I'll have a play when I get there. Mark Hi Mark Indeedy - I re-read the dialog boxes and it's a bit misleading....so the first box is the default, 7-days a week type setting and then the other boxes over-ride that one,...

Re: BOINC Network preferences not working

Hi Mark Yup - it's the daily scheduler screen. Set the global "Transfer files only between" 0:00 and 0:00 (no transfers) This creates an error saying that start and end times must be different. I had this ticked and set to between 0:00 and 24:00 (which are the defaults). I had all the others ticked ...

BOINC Network preferences not working

Hi all In advance of this weeks Sprint, I downloaded some tasks from a few projects and set "BOINC Manager > Options > Computing preferences > Daily schedules" to only connect to the internet from Thursday (about 9pm*) through until midnight on Sunday. So, a tick in the respective boxes (and setting...

Re: Fundraising (website running costs)

Hi all I don't see any paypal links on any pages. Am i missing something or just blind? Hi Neil The forum software was updated a while ago and in doing so, because the software was completely re-written (and even though the major version number of software didn't change) it caused some of the previ...

Re: Fundraising (website running costs)

Hi Mark No worries ;-) In the end it was a very simple fix...but it was beyond me... And as Chris guessed it was all down to the phpBB cache throwing a wobbly...once the extension was disabled. Janos came to the rescue, purged the cache manually and all was good again. And I've learned something too...

Back again !!

Hi all Apologies for the small amount of down time. I'd been advised by my hosting provider to upgrade my installed version of php, plus I'd also seen a comment about their being Adverts being detected by Adblocking software. So, I tried to upgrade the former and disable the latter (as it wasn't act...

ReactOS gets an update :-)

Hi all So, for those who don't like M$ Windoze and can't get along with Linux, there aren't too many options. But one that has been coming along for a while is ReactOS, that allows you to run *some* (mainly older) Windows programs, without Windoze being installed. And there's news that a new version...
