UK BOINC Team - crunching 24/7

A Bit of Fun - our 1st Crunchathon (for SETI)

Updated: 24th April 2006
Well, the 1st Crunchathon is now over. Many thanks for your contribution if you participated.

The results have been quite good - as a Team we generated a total of 434,473.95 credits for SETI during the period 16th-23rd April - that's an average of 2,586 credits per hour.
Overall, we generated 681,967.30 credits for ALL projects during the same period - an average of 4,059 credits per hour. Not bad, eh?

As a result, we're now closer to becoming the #1 UK Team crunching for SETI - which is still the aim of the Team - which should be achieved sometime around the end of June/early July...!

In terms of actual results, the following table shows what happened:

Updated: 20th April
We're now exactly 72 hours into the 1st Crunchathon, and the results so far are encouraging. Our aim is to generate a lot more credits for SETI, so we can get within striking distance of being in 1st place in UK for all SETI Teams.

And thus far, in said 72 hours, we've amassed 179.489.11 SETI credits alone - which is an improvement on our normal "average". If we keep this up, after the next 96 hours, then we should be around 314,000 credits closer to our goal, (compared to when we started). Not bad for a week's worth of crunching...! Keep it up.

Just over a day to go and all is looking well. SETI is supplying WU's, so no issues there. Set your cache to anything from 2-10 days to ensure that you have enough WU's to cover any "outages" and then you're away. We'll be taking a note of the credit scores at the start, so we can see what effect the "Crunchathon" is having on our target to become #1 UK SETI Team. Good luck !

Less than a week to go to the "Crunchathon" - by now you should start thinking about setting some of your non-SETI projects to "no new work" - otherwise you'll download WU's that you might not be able to return in time (so as to gain credit for the work done).

Likewise, make sure that for the SETI project, go to "My account" and adjust the "General Preferences" setting of "Connect to network about every" to about 2-3 days. SETI usually closes down on Wednesdays for a server back-up (takes about 3-4 hours and hence no work is available during this time), so setting the "Connect" time to a couple of days enables you to cache more work over this period.

OK - so you should be aware about what a "Crunch" is - it's a time when as many team members as possible all crunch for the same project.
It's totally voluntary, but as we've seen so far, the idea has gained momentum and hence why we're going for a bigger Crunch this time around.!.

The "Crunchathon" date takes place from:
midnight Sunday 16th April - midnight Sunday 23rd April 2006

And we'll be concentrating our efforts on:
SETI@home

Please "donate" as many hours as you can, towards the Crunchathon - you have the choice as to how much to donate - please give us 24 hours, 72 hours, or the do the entire 168 hours - you choose - but in the main, the whole Team benefits.!!

(If SETI@home has NO WORK or is OFFLINE, as sometimes happens, then the back-up project(s) will be whatever other project(s) you are currently a member of !!).

All you have to do (on/before 16th April), is to make sure you are already a member of the SETI project.
Then set all your other projects to "No new work" as well as "suspending" them from actually doing any crunching during the period you want to crunch for.
Thirdly, set the SETI@home project as the only one able to download any new work.
Finally, on/after 24th April, you can switch any of your other projects back to "Allow new work" and "Resume".

Normally for SETI, the Team produces about 50,000 WU credits per day (around 1.5 million a month).
So, as the team now has in excess of 300 members, I'm sure we can generate, what 750,000 in a week ??

Many Team members have already agreed to participate in our "Crunchathon": I was listing them, but with nearly 500 members in the team and many agreeing to join in, so the listing became too long to keep managing...!

In future months, we'll be featuring other projects.
If Team members would like to vote for a project to feature in a Crunch - please see the Team forum.
