A Bit of Fun - the 1st Weekend Crunch

Updated: 27th Feb 2006
The very 1st "Weekend Crunch" has now ended.

The results are now in and we can report that we have successfully increased our total average credit as a result (we assume) of members crunching more WU's over the weekend.

In terms of actual results, the following table shows what happened:
Project: Total Credits at start: Total Credits at end: Difference RAC
(per day)
Percentage achieved over 2 days (compared to 2x RAC) Affect of Weekend Crunch on projects
BBC 13,608.00 22,680.00 9,072.00 953.59 475.68% new project, hence RAC not realistic at present
Burp 1,359.93 1,368.96 9.03 30.86 14.63% no work available
CPDN 2,244,318.06 2,256,057.13 11,739.07 7,636.65 76.86% 23% less credit awarded

Rosetta 312,059.56 315,684.83 3,625.27 3,442.55 52.65% significantly less (48%) credit awarded

Sztaki 31,080.39 31,192.03 111.64 174.07 32.07% less work done
uFluids 26,046.54 29,044.74 2,998.20 386.23 388.14% more work done
WCG 12,644.00 13,168.00 524.00 251.00 104.38% same
TOTALS 11,239,523.79 11,411,729.07 172,205.28 69,647.22
As can be seen, we significantly increased our credits for SETI, (whch was the whole idea of doing the Crunch), but at the expense of other projects, which was also expected.

See here how well we did for credits

And see the huge increase in Active hosts here

However, this should be corrected next time, as our 2nd Weekend Crunch will be targetted at one of the other projects.

OK, dear reader - the very 1st "Weekend Crunch" has now started.

Quite a few members have been in contact to say that they will be crunching solely for SETI for the 48 hours as from midnight on Friday night. Hopefully, we will generate a few more than our "average" credit for SETI of around 45,000 per day. So, if we can score more than this average over the two/three days afterwards (by which time, the credits should have been awarded), then we'd have achieved something very positive.

Less than 24 hours to go before the 1st Weekend Crunch starts - GOOD LUCK everybody
Hopefully in the next few days, the SETI stats will show a siginificant "blip" once the credits are awarded.

Seems that one or two people think this is being done for a prize, or because I'm a Slavemaster or because we think we're better.

In truth, none of the above is the truth - fact is, if one reads the reasons (below) it's a fairly simple idea to just ensure everyone who is a team member is crunching for the projects they have chosen to join - whether they want to switch projects for 48 hours is up to the individual. Of course it's nice to think that as a Team we're operating in a mutually beneficial way (to help each of the projects), but ultimately, it's down to user choice. And that, dear reader, is entirely up to you.

The whole point of using your computer for BOINC is to help the projects in whatever way you feel you can. Whether you believe in the science or the distributed computing model or whatever else, the main thing is that your contribution should be it's own reward. And if you're part of a Team of people with a similar approach, then surely that's not a bad thing?

It has occurred to me that it would be nice to do something that generated some "Team bonding", in order to help members to feel part of this Team.

And given peoples busy lives and the many things that take priority, so it's difficult to find a simple FREE way for Team members to feel as though they are useful contributors.
So, I've come up with a very basic idea, which may be worth your consideration - I wonder if there's any interest out there?

Basically, we dedicate ourselves to a "Weekend Crunch" whereby all the Teams considerable resource is dedicated to one project for a specific time period - say 48 hours.

Granted that some members only crunch for one project anyway - which is all fine and dandy.
But as a "collective", it would be nice to think that say for one period a month, and irrespective of personal fulfillment, everyone (in our Team) dedicates all their resources to one specific project.

So, I'd like to start this off, and would suggest the following project and date:
Project to crunch for: SETI@home
Dates to crunch on: 25th-26th Feb 2006

(If SETI@home has NO WORK or is OFFLINE, as sometimes happens, then the back-up project will be "Einstein").

All you have to do (on/before 25th Feb), is to make sure you are already a member of the SETI project.
Then set all your other projects to "No new work" as well as "suspending" them from actually doing any crunching during the week-end.
Thirdly, set the SETI@home project as the only one able to download new work.
Finally, on/after 27th Feb, you can switch each of the other projects back to "Allow new work" and "Resume".

Normally for SETI, the Team produces about 40,000 WU credits per day.
Given the number of Team members, I'm sure we could generate maybe 125,000 WU credits over the week-end?

Bob Browett Sounds like a laugh, why not?
UBT - Lee This sounds like a great idea. If the team is also close to moving up a few places in a certain projects rank this idea could give us a push.
Please put my name down.

UBT - Grumpy Old Bloke I'll try to get all my hosts running whatever's the project of the month...
pincher Thought i was all alone out here with just names on a list, but a email or 2 livens it up a bit and makes the names come alive.I'm up for the 25th.

Flaxton   The first weekend crunching Seti was a lot of fun and feel that it has really given the group a boost.

In future months, we'll be featuring other projects.
If Team members would like to vote for a project to feature in a Crunch - please see the Team forum.
